NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will continue its three-game homestand on Wednesday when CNU caps off non-conference action with a 5 p.m. tilt against Lynchburg at Captains Field.

For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
The Captains are coming off of an impressive 16-6 victory against Messiah last Thursday. During that contest,
Cat Leighty led the squad with eight points, while
Sam Wettengel turned in a performance for the ages. The junior collected six ground balls, forced five turnovers, and added four points. With that showcase, she became just the fourth player in school history with at least four ground balls, four caused turnovers, and four points in a single contest, joining former legends Katie Doherty (vs. Guilford on March 1, 2009), Kristyn Hankins (vs. Averett on April 2, 2005), and Sally Allstadt (vs. Averett on March 29, 2003).
So far this season,
Kaitlyn Ready leads the Capital Athletic Conference with 117 saves, while
Sarah Culver sits second in the league with 32 goals. Both standouts are also closing in on history. Culver is one free-position goal away from matching Meaghan Galvin's program record of 55 set from 2014-17. Meanwhile, Ready is 26 saves away from tying Gayle Robinson's school record of 472 stops established from 2007-10.
Among other top performers in the conference, Wettengel is second in the league with 19 caused turnovers, while
Julia Golden is third with 18. Golden also slots sixth in the CAC with 35 draw controls, and Leighty is fourth with 20 assists. As a team, Christopher Newport leads the Capital with 27 free-position goals, while the squad's .491 shooting percentage is the second-highest among conference schools.
On the other side, Lynchburg dropped its last two decisions during a Spring Break trip to Clearwater, Florida. The Hornets fell to Swarthmore, 13-5, before dropping a 17-9 decision to Meredith on March 14. Despite the stumbles, the squad still ranks among the NCAA leaders in fewest turnovers per contest. Lynchburg is averaging just 12.00 turnovers per game, which stands as the second-best rate in the country. Only fellow ODAC squad Roanoke is averaging fewer.
On an individual level, Lauren Bodamer has started five games between the pipes and ranks second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with an 8.65 goals-against-average. Emmy Yarmy has also made five appearances this season, including one start, and sits fourth in the conference with a .426 save percentage. Offensively, both Alicia Sandoval and Kelsi Trevisan have 21 points apiece. Trevisan has at least one point in every game this year while boasting four hat-tricks. Sandoval leads the team with 12 assists, including five in the team's win over Frostburg State on March 2.
Wednesday's game marks the 16th meeting between the two programs with CNU holding a 9-6 edge in the series. The Captains have won five straight with the last victory coming in 2015. During the most recent battle, current assistant coach
Catie Chess erupted for four goals, including a pair of free-position tallies, during a 19-10 win at Lynchburg.
