Box Score MURFREESBORO, N.C. -- Playing in the seven-point format commonly used at NCAA Division I and II, the 35th-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team fell behind after doubles but won four of the six singles matches to sneak out a 4-3 win on the road Sunday afternoon. Junior
Andy Mason clinched the match at No. 2 singles for the Captains (7-5), who downed Chowan University in North Carolina for the program's 13th straight win over the Hawks.
In the seven-point format, a single point is awarded for doubles play and the home team won the doubles point with 6-4 victories at No. 1 and 2. CNU rallied for wins at 2, 3, 5, and 6 singles, including Mason's clincher.
CNU got on the board first with a default win at No. 6 due to Chowan not having a player to compete. Then,
Mason Kolls gave the Captains the lead with a straight set win at No. 5 over Rafael D'Atri. Kolls slid up to 5 and won 6-2, 6-1 to put CNU ahead, 2-1. As play continued the score was knotted at 3-3 after
Dominic Lacombe lost at No. 1 and
William Trang fell at No. 4, but rookie
Ryan Macy won a tight match at No. 3. Macy faced Adi Kalrakperov and traded set victories before a hotly contested third set tiebreaker. The Captains' rookie won 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 to set up Mason for the clinching blow.
In the match at No. 2 singles, Mason faced Mariano Yeh and fell behind after a 7-6 loss in the first set. Even tighter than Macy's match, Mason rallied back for a 7-6 win in the second set and then outlasted Yeh for a 6-2 win in the breaker.
The Captains picked up the team's fourth straight win with the match and will next face nationally-ranked Mary Washington in conference play at home next Saturday, March 30. The match is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
