NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 35th-ranked CNU men's tennis team opened Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday in dominant fashion, picking up a pair of 9-0 wins over Penn State Harrisburg (6-5, 0-1) and York College of Pennsylvania (6-4, 0-1).
The Captains improve to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in league action with the victories, In doubles play, CNU gave away just three games in the six combined matches. In singles, CNU surrendered only four games lost to the Spartans in a convincing victory during the afternoon match. Against the Lions in the morning, CNU cruised to wins with a shuffled lineup, without allowing a single opponent to win more than four games.
Rookie
Mason Kolls had the best day for CNU, picking up a pair of wins in singles play and one doubles victory. Against the Lions, Kolls slid up to No. 2 singles and dropped Hyun Jun Kwon in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. He also played at No. 2 doubles with
Paul Baron, earning an 8-3 win over Kwon and partner Austin Stehman. Kolls also played in the afternoon match against the Spartans, earning a 6-0, 6-2 win over Justin Rose at No. 6.
In doubles play against Penn State Harrisburg, CNU got a pair of 8-0 wins at 1 and 3, with
James Baron and
Dominic Lacombe playing in the former and
Mitch Brody and
Walter Buck pairing up for the latter. Buck won at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-1, and Brody earned the win at No. 3, 6-0, 6-4.
Against York (Pa.), CNU got three 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles play from
Andy Mason at No. 2,
Ryan Macy at No. 3 and
Nicholas Ruzicka at No. 5.
Dominic Lacombe, at No. 1, and
William Trang, at No. 4, also earned 6-0, 6-1 wins for CNU.
The Captains return to action on Sunday at Chowan University with a 1:00 pm start in Murfressboro, N.C.
