NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Rookie
Kaitlyn Hasty continues to tear the cover off the ball this week with 7 more RBI on Saturday and three extra-base hits to lead the 7th-ranked Christopher Newport softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Penn State-Behrend. The Captains won by run-rule in both games, winning in five innings of game one, 11-1, and walking off in the bottom of the 6th inning of game two, 13-5.
The Christopher Newport offense has caught fire, scoring in double figures in three of the last four and four of the last six games. Riding a 13-game winning streak, the Captains improved to 13-1 overall with the wins, while Penn State-Behrend falls to even .500 at 6-6.
Hasty has been at the forefront of the offensive explosion, going 8-for-12 with 3 HR, 12 RBI, 2 runs scored and 3 XBH this week. On Saturday, She finished with a pair of two-hit games while hitting for the cycle over the course of the two games. She homered and singled in game one and added a double and triple in game two.
While the offense supported her efforts, transfer
Trish Webb (2-0) earned her first start of the season and put together one of the finest efforts of the year for CNU pitching. The right-hander struck out the side in the top of the first in a sign of what was to come as she allowed just three hits and one run over the complete-game victory. Webb struck out seven in 5.0 innings of work while allowing just a single walk.
In support of their starting pitcher, the Captains scored multiple runs in three of the four frames while notching at least one run in every inning. Getting things started in the bottom of the first,
Sarah Proctor walked and promptly stole second.
Grace Wild also walked to bring up
Patty Maye Ohanian, who blistered an RBI double into left field.
Bailey Roberts plated a run with a single into right field and Hasty followed with her first RBI of the day with a hard single into left field.
In the second inning, Proctor got things started again with a single and a stolen base, and was again followed by a walk from Wild. Two batters later, Roberts doubled down the left field line to score both and set up Hasty for a two-run blast, her fourth of the season. Ohanian earned the sole RBI of the third with an RBI single before the Captains piled on three more in the fourth to get into run-rule territory.
Calah Savage singled to left, followed by a single from Webb. Proctor continued her strong performance with a two-run double to left center, and then came in to score on a three-base hit by Wild. The triple was Wild's fourth of the season after hitting just one in her first two seasons combined.
After the first game victory, the Captains offense again came to life in game number two. CNU scored 10 runs, all earned, against starting pitcher Alaina Wyckoff. After the Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first half-inning, the Captains quickly flipped the scoreboard with a four-run bottom half. Wild, Ohanian, and Roberts loaded the bases for Hasty, who promptly unloaded them with a bases-clearing triple. Pinch runner
Krista Jasak would score the fourth run of the frame on a double steal attempt that ended the inning but not before Jasak tagged home.
In the bottom of the second inning, sophomore shortstop
Natalie Carmichael wasted no time adding to the lead as she hit a towering lead-off home run over the center field wall for her first career blast. She became the seventh different CNU player to clear the fence this season as she smashed the solo shot to deep center field.
Caroline Helmer tacked on a run in the third with an RBI single and Carmichael triggered another high-flying inning in the fourth with a lead-off single. Rookie
Keely Crittenden reached on a base-hit bunt and Proctor plated Carmichael with a single into right field. Back-to-back sacrifice flies scored two more runs before Hasty capped her stellar performance with an RBI double down the right field line.
Unable to hold onto the eight-run lead through five, the Captains offense would need to score three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to walk off with the victory. Wild walked and Ohanian singled into left field to bring the game-winning run to the plate. Roberts singled to load the bases and bring up rookie
Carter Morris for her first collegiate at-bat and one she will likely never forget. Morris, inserted earlier as a pinch runner and staying in the game for Hasty, smacked a hard-hit single through the right side of the infield to chase home Ohanian and Roberts for the game-winning blow.
With Hasty driving in four and Morris added the two-run single, the number five hole in the Captains' lineup combined to go 3-for-4 with 6 RBI in game two. Ohanian was 3-for-3 with 3 runs scored while Carmichael's 2-for-3 effort was the third multi-hit game of her career.
In the circle,
Laura Kate Moss (1-0) earned the win with 5.0 innings pitched and six strikeouts.
Aubrey Bates tossed the final frame, striking out one in a perfect 1-2-3 inning to help secure the win.
CNU will return to action on Sunday, March 17 as the Captains host Roanoke College for a pair starting at 1:30 pm.
