NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Opening the spring schedule on Saturday evening at the James River Country Club indoor tennis courts, the 33rd-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team made quick work of cross-water rival Virginia Wesleyan (0-1) by a final score of 9-0. The Captains shutout improved the team to 6-0 in their last six season opening matches.
Christopher Newport dropped just four games in doubles action as the Captains raced out to a 3-0 lead.
Ryan Macy and
Andy Mason paired together on the top line for an 8-1 win over Mitchell Perry and Nick Gunther; and
Bryce Coleman and
Dominic Lacombe also won, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles against Anthony Wilson and Timothy Tep. The No. 2 doubles tandem, seniors
Nicholas Ruzicka and
William Trang, captured an 8-2 win over Paul Gladstrone and Michael Portera for the doubles sweep.
In singles play, the Captains won in straight sets in five of the six matches. Mason picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 over Gladstone followed by a 6-1, 6-2 victory by Lacombe at No. 2 against Gunther. Macy and Ruzicka each captured 6-1, 6-3 wins at 3 and 4 respectively, while rookie
Mason Kolls also dropped only four games in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Anthony Wilson at No. 6. Kolls continues his strong start with his first collegiate dual victory and is now 5-1 to start his career.
Rounding out the victories in Saturday's season-opening win was Trang, picking up a 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 win over Andreas Combos at No. 5 singles.
The nationally-ranked Captains will return to action on Saturday, February 16 as they host Division I Longwood University at 5:00 pm.
