NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's tennis team suffered it's first loss of the year on Saturday evening, falling to Division I Longwood University, 9-0. 

The Captains hosted the Lancers at the James River Country Club indoor tennis courts on a chilly February day and the home team battled in several matches but were unable to come away with any team points. 

In doubles action, CNU's senior pairing at No. 2 doubles of Nicholas Ruzicka and William Trang hung with Marc Casasnovas and Guillermo Cagigas before eventually falling to the Longwood tandem, 8-6. The No. 3 bout was also close as Bryce Coleman and Dominic Lacombe suffered an 8-5 loss to Julian Farthing and Raisei Sakai. 

With a 3-0 lead headed into singles play, Longwood quickly picked up the clinching points in singles and finished off the shutouts. Rookie Mason Kolls had the best singles performance at No. 6 versus Rosen Naydenov as Kolls won the first set before falling by a final score of 6-7, 6-3, 10-2. 

Lacombe forced Guilherme Sergio to win a seventh game in the second set as he fell by a score of 6-2, 7-5, and the other four matches saw each CNU player win at least three games against their Division I foe. 

The Captains will return to action next week, hosting N.C. Wesleyan College on Friday, September 22 at 5:00 pm.
