NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - As the calendar turns to March on Friday, the Captains of Christopher Newport begin the madness of the Division III NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. CNU, ranked ninth in the nation and riding a nine-game winning streak, will host the Falcons of Albertus Magnus (CT) at the Freeman Center. Tipoff time for the opening round game is set for 7:30 p.m. Alfred (NY) and Ramapo (NJ) will open the proceedings with a scheduled start time of 5:30 p.m.
John Krikorian's squad is making its fourth straight trip to the tournament, and this will be the 23rd appearance in the 52-year history of the program. Christopher Newport has a record of 25-3, and the Captains captured both the regular and post-season titles in the Capital Athletic Conference.
Christopher Newport has won all 16 games played at the Freeman Center this season, and the Captains have been led by senior
Marcus Carter, who is averaging a team-high 16.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Carter is coming off a career-high 31-point performance last Saturday in the CAC Championship game victory over York (PA). Carter, a first team All-Conference selection in the CAC this season, is just 13 points shy of sixth place on the school's all-time scoring list.
Albertus Magnus is the Champion of the Great Northeast Conference. The Falcons defeated St. Joseph (CT.) in the title game on Saturday, 81-77. Although CNU and Albertus Magnus have never met, Coach Krikorian's first victory ever as a head coach came 14 seasons ago in his first game at the Merchant Marine Academy...over Albertus Magnus.
Friday's winners will advance to play Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
Tickets for the NCAA action will be available Friday and Saturday prior to game time at the Freeman Center Ticket Office. Chairback seats will be $15.00, Adult General Admission seats will be $10.00, Senior/Youth/Student tickets with valid ID will be $5.00, and CNU Students will be free with valid ID.
Both games Friday and Saturday's game will be streamed live on CNUsports.com/watch. Live stats will also be available for all three games. CNU games are also broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with Friday's pre-game show beginning at 7:10 p.m.
