NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will host Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday when CNU welcomes the Marlines to Captains Field for a 4 p.m. showdown.
The Captains enter the contest at 0-3, including 0-2 at home. Virginia Wesleyan sits at 1-1. Wednesday's game will be the first road test of the year for the Marlins.
For those fans unable to attend the game, live stats and a video stream of the action will be available at CNUsports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
Entering Wednesday's tilt,
Sarah Culver currently ranks seventh in the nation with 12 goals. The senior erupted for six in her last outing at Haverford on Saturday. She also posted five in the opener against Meredith before striking once against 13th-ranked Washington & Lee. She also ranks 14th in the country with 13 total points.
Along with her individual efforts, Culver has also helped CNU rank among the national-leaders in free-position percentage. Overall, the team has capitalized on 53 percent of its eight-meter shots, which places the squad 27th in the NCAA. Culver leads the team with five free-position goals, while
Sam Wettengel has converted both of her attempts this season.
On the defensive side,
Kaitlyn Ready currently sits fifth in the NCAA with 31 saves after ranking second in the country in that category last season. Her finest performance of the season came during a 14-save showcase in the opener against Meredith. She also leads the Captains with seven caused turnovers, while
Julia Golden has six.
Equally impressive on the defensive end,
Katie Orrison stepped up with a strong performance on Saturday at Haverford. The junior helped cut off four clear attempts by the Fords while securing two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls. Freshman
Kendall Krause also caused a turnover and grabbed a pair of rollers during that contest.
On the other side of the field, Virginia Wesleyan bounced back from a loss to Meredith in the opener with a 13-8 triumph over Marymount on Saturday. Leading by two at halftime, the Marlins stretched their lead with an impressive second half performance. Ripping off four straight goals in the middle of the period, VWU eventually cruised to the victory. Tori Manahan led the team with four points during that contest, while Renee Burt also had a hat-trick.
Overall this season, both Manahan and Burt have five points, while Abby Shope has three. Meanwhile, Liza Holford has a team-high 11 draw controls, and Jordan Moilanen has a .280 save percentage and a 13.36 goals-against-average.
In 18 previous meetings between the two programs, CNU holds an 11-7 edge in the series. The Captains have won the last two battles, including an 18-2 triumph in Virginia Beach last year. During that match-up, Culver contributed five goals, while
Madison Chestnut had three points.
Following Wednesday's tilt, Christopher Newport will remain at home for a 1 p.m. contest against Shenandoah on Saturday.
