HAVERFORD, Pa. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will take its show on the road this weekend when the Captains travel to Haverford for a noon battle on Saturday at Swan Field.
Entering the contest, CNU currently sits at 0-2, while Saturday's tilt will mark Haverford's first appearance of the season.
For those fans unable to attend the game, Haverford will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at HaverfordAthletics.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
Although the Captains have dropped their first two games of the year, both contests came against programs coming off NCAA Tournament appearances last season. The squad's last appearance came on Tuesday when Christopher Newport dropped a 19-6 decision against No. 13 Washington & Lee. During that contest,
Sam Wettengel recorded her second straight hat-trick while also forcing three turnovers and grabbing four ground balls. Along with Wettengel's well-rounded performance,
Sarah Culver came through with her team-leading seventh point of the season on a first-half goal.
In addition to Culver and Wettengel,
Cat Leighty has also notched a goal in both games this season. Meanwhile, on the defensive end,
Julia Golden leads the team with five caused turnovers, while Wettengel,
Gracie Sanders, and
Kaitlyn Ready all have five ground balls. Sanders also leads the team with seven draw controls, and Ready has made 20 saves during her time between the pipes.
On the other side of the field, Haverford is coming off of a 2018 campaign during which the team compiled a 12-5 record. The Fords were selected fourth in the Centennial Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, which was headlined by Gettysburg, the two-time defending national champions.
Haverford welcomes back a strong veteran contingent from last year's team, including reigning All-Region performers Anna Meyers and Rina Rosnow. The squad also returns Allie Gibbons, who led the Fords with 56 points last season while picking up second-team All-League accolades.
The Captains and Fords have two previous meetings with each program grabbing a victory. Last season, Haverford notched a 16-15 overtime triumph in Newport News. Leighty had four goals for CNU during that clash, while Rosnow contributed six points for HC, including the game-winning strike.
Following Saturday's tilt, Christopher Newport will return home for a 4 p.m. showdown with Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday.
