CNU Women's Lacrosse to Host No. 13 Washington & Lee on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Originally scheduled for Wednesday, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team's battle with No. 13 Washington & Lee has been moved to Tuesday at 4 p.m. due to the threat of inclement weather.

The game, which will be held at Captains Field, will also serve as the Virginia "Lacrosse the Nations" Cup. The Captains and Generals will use the contest to raise awareness for Lacrosse the Nations - an international organization that utilizes lacrosse and other physical activities to teach important life skills to children in need.

Entering the battle, both teams are looking to bounce back after season-opening setbacks. Christopher Newport dropped a 20-14 decision against Meredith on Saturday, while Washington & Lee was upended by No. 8 Mary Washington, 10-8.

In their first appearance of the year, the Captains received six points, including five goals, from Sarah Culver. Sam Wettengel also added a hat-trick, while freshman Victoria Betterly contributed four points. Betterly was one of four freshmen to start for CNU, marking the most first-year competitors to start a season opener since the 2010 squad ran out six.

On the defensive side, Kaitlyn Ready notched 14 saves, including four on free-position attempts. She also caused three turnovers during her time in the crease. Meanwhile, Julia Golden also forced three miscues against the Avenging Angels, while Taylor Walker added two.

Also dropping a hard-fought battle to open the year, Washington & Lee held a one-goal lead against Mary Washington at halftime on Saturday before the Eagles stormed back in the second stanza. Emily Carden, Katherine Faria, and Haley Tucker all deposited two goals apiece for the Generals, while Cordelia Peters led the way with three points, including two assists.

In addition to the offensive stars, Elliott Gilbert chipped in with 11 saves for Washington & Lee. Carden and Dani Murray also forced two turnovers apiece, and Tucker snatched seven draw controls.

Peters and Murray both secured All-Region honors for their efforts in 2018, while Tucker was a first-team All-American in 2017 before having her junior year cut short due to an injury. The Generals, who were selected as the preseason favorites in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2018.

In 11 previous meetings between the two programs, Washington & Lee holds a 10-1 edge in the series. The Generals have won the last four meetings, including an 11-4 triumph last year.
