Captains Close Regular Season on the Road Saturday at Penn State Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -- With regular season titles on the line, the Christopher Newport basketball teams will head to Penn State Harrisburg for the final regular season game of the year on Saturday. First, the Captains women will take on the Lions at 1:00 pm followed by the men's matchup at 3:00 pm.

Both CNU squads are in first place in the CAC standings heading into the final day of action on Saturday. The women have already clinched at least a share of the league title but can win it outright with a victory; the CNU men are locked in a tie for first with York (Pa.) and will have the postseason seeding decided with the final game. Live stats and video will be available for both games and links can be found at CNUsports.com.

The CNU women are coming off a convincing win at Salisbury on Wednesday night, defeating the Sea Gulls, 81-45 in one of the most complete games of the season offensively and defensively. Led by a 24 point performance by rookie guard Jessica Foster, the Captains shot 54% as a team and 55% from beyond the arc. Salisbury was held to just 23% shooting and failed to score 50 points against the vaunted CNU defense.

With the win, CNU improved to 19-5 overall, 10-3 in league play and paired with a Southern Virginia loss to Mary Washington, the Captains took over sole possession of first place in the league standings. Three CNU players are averaging double figures as junior Kiana Kirkland leads the way with 11.6 points per game. Senior Jessica Daguilh is averaging 10.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while shooting over 54% from the field. Rookie Sondra Fan rounds out the dangerous trio with 10.6 points per game while also ranking second on the team in assists with 54.

Penn State Harrisburg is 10-14, 4-9 this season after winning two of their last three games. A deep senior class for the Lions will be hosting the Captains in their final home game, led by Shanique Mattis averaging 15.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.2 steals per game. Harrisburg currently leads the nation in three-pointers attempted this season and ranks fifth nationally in three-pointers made per game.

Following the women's matchup, the 13th-ranked CNU men's team will be playing for their fourth consecutive CAC regular season title. The Captains have won five of the last seven regular season crowns under head coach John Krikorian including the last two as members of the USA South Athletic Conference and three of the first five in the CAC. Christopher Newport enters the game with a 21-3 overall record and 11-2 mark in conference play while winning five straight games.

CNU blew out Salisbury in their last conference, running away for a 17-point win on the road, 91-74. With the win, the senior class became the winningest group in program history, marking the first four-year run to reach 100 career victories. Seniors Marcus Carter, Tyler Femi, and Logan Miller have now gone 100-15 over the last four years for a winning percentage of 87%.

Carter leads the Captains with 15.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, while sophomore Jason Aigner is also averaging over 15 points per contest this season. Aigner has now buried 89 three-pointers in his second season and ranks in the top-ten nationally in shots made from beyond the arc. Up front, juniors Savonte Chappell and Cutch Ellis have shared the load and are combining for 17.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

Penn State Harrisburg features one of the nation's most elite shot blockers over the last four years, as Gbolahan Alliyu has piled up 226 swats during his career, which ranks second among Division III players and 8th across the entirety of the NCAA. He is one of a very deep senior class playing in their final home game on Saturday, including Kahlil Williams (14.6 ppg) and Chris Bing (11.9 ppg). Williams and Bing are also each grabbing over six rebounds per game to help lead the way for the Lions.

Following the action on Saturday, the Captains will host an opening round doubleheader at the Freeman Center for the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament next Tuesday, February 19. Game times will be 6:00 and 8:00 pm.
