Freshman Ian Anderson Posts 20 Points to Lead Captains to Victory over William Peace, 83-60

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport got plenty of production from its bench Wednesday night as the Captains recorded an 83-60 victory over William Peace. John Krikorian's squad, ranked 18th in the nation this week, is now 7-2 on the season.

Freshman Ian Anderson posted a career-high 20 points and also pulled down nine rebounds to lead the way...and he managed to do it in just 20 minutes of playing time off the bench. Anderson has averaged 9.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for the Captains over the first nine games of his career, and has reached double figures in scoring three times.

Senior Dalon McHugh II registered a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and juniors Adrian Beasley (13 points) and Liam Harrington (10 points) also reached double figures.

"Every game gives us an opportunity to grow and get better, and I think we did that tonight," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "It was the kind of game we expected. We had a lot of guys step up and give us really good contributions and we're going to need that as we move deeper and deeper into the season."

Following a slow start, the Captains gradually built a 13-point advantage at halftime, 37-24. Christopher Newport then surged to a lead of as many as 28 in the second stanza on the way to the 23-point triumph.

The Captains played all 18 student-athletes on the roster, and 13 got into the scoring column. Christopher Newport held the Pacers to just 29 percent shooting (16 of 56) and out-rebounded WPU, 55-40. Only 24 of the 83 points for the Captains came from the starting five, as 59 points were posted by nine different players off the bench.

William Peace fell to 0-6 with the loss, and the Pacers were led by Trey Bryant's 15-point effort, all of which came in the second half. The game was the first meeting ever of the two schools. WPU had been averaging 83 points per game over their first five defeats, but were held to just 60 points by the Captains.

The victory, in front of 896 Freeman Center fans, came in the final home game before Christmas for the Captains, who have two road games remaining before the break. Wednesday's win also came just three days after the Captains had a six-game winning streak snapped by Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Sunday. The loss Sunday also put an end to Christopher Newport's 22-game home winning streak at the Freeman Center.

Christopher Newport heads on the road on Saturday to take on undefeated and ninth-ranked Randolph-Macon College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Ashland, Va.
