ASHLAND, Va. - The Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon used a 13-2 run late in the first half to open an 11-point halftime lead, and went on to beat the Captains of Christopher Newport, 79-62. Saturday's matinee at Crenshaw Gymnasium improved the ninth-ranked Jackets to 9-0, while the 18th-ranked Captains fell to 7-3 on the season.
"They're the kind of team that can really show you your weaknesses if you haven't already figured them out," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "We have a lot of work to do to get to the level we need to be."
Christopher Newport senior Dalon McHugh registered his second straight double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds. Junior
Jason Aigner was the only other Captain to reach double digits with 12 points on four three-pointers. Randolph-Macon freshman Miles Mallory led all scorers with a career-high 21 points, while junior Buzz Anthony added 18.
The opening half featured five ties and four lead changes over the first 14 minutes. With the game tied 21-21 with just under six minutes remaining in the first half, the Captains went on a scoring drought that lasted 11 straight offensive possessions. Christopher Newport went 0 for nine from the field with four turnovers during the stretch, and the result was 11 straight R-MC points to make it a 32-21 game. Two free throws by freshman
Ian Anderson with 37 seconds left in the half ended the drought, but the Captains could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way. The Yellow Jackets pushed the lead to as many as 22 in the second half on the way to the 17-point victory.
The Captains turned the ball over 18 times, shot 40 percent for the game from the field (22 of 55), and knocked down just four of 15 (27 percent) from three-point range. The Yellow Jackets made 32 of 61 shots (53 percent), and also were four of 15 beyond the arc. Christopher Newport won the battle on the boards, recording a 37-32 rebounding edge.
The victory ended a string of seven straight wins by the Captains over the Yellow Jackets. R-MC now holds a 19-10 advantage in the all-time series, and a crowd of 1,212 filled Crenshaw Gymnasium for the annual renewal of the series.
The Captains now have a seven-day break for final exams. Christopher Newport returns to action on Sunday, December 15th, when the Captains travel to Virginia Beach to take on Virginia Wesleyan in a 3:30 p.m. start.
