2018 CoSIDA Academic All-District Men's Soccer Teams (PDF)
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- One of only two field players to start all 18 games for the nationally-ranked Captains men's soccer program this season, junior
Davis Pillow has also been excelling in the classroom as well. On Thursday afternoon, Pillow was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in a release by the organization, becoming the first men's soccer player to garner the recognition since 2017.
The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The organization recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions - NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA - and divides the student-athletes into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
Pillow is the sixth Christopher Newport men's soccer player to earn the honor all-time and the first Captains' student-athlete recognized this year. The all-time honorees in men's soccer are Billy Lucas (2004), Michael Zimmerman (2012), Garrett Van Nutt (2105), Jimmy Grace (2016), and
Bobby Seifert (2016). He was joined in the announcement Thursday by senior women's soccer star Carson Pokorny, who earned her record third career certificate.
Carrying a 3.89 cumulative grade-point average at the time of his nomination, Pillow is majoring in Finance. He is a two-time Capital Athletic Conference All-Academic Team selection and has performed well on and off the field throughout his three-year tenure as a Captain.
Pillow has started 50 of his 52 career games played as a full-time starter from the outset of his career. A member of a stout defensive line, he has helped the Captains back secure 19 shutouts over the last three seasons with a goals-against average below 1.00. This season, he has started all 18 games and ranks second on the team in minutes played with 1,500 logged out of a possible 1,704 (88%).
He and the rest of the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will play for a conference championship on Saturday, November 9 as they host the University of Mary Washington at 6:00 pm for the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
First team Academic All-District selections, like Pillow, advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot. First-, second-, and third-team Academic All-America Men's Soccer honorees will be announced on Tuesday, December 3.
