Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 7 Captains Defeated by Mary Washington in CAC Semifinals, 1-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The third-seeded University of Mary Washington Eagles ended #2-seeded Christopher Newport women's soccer's hopes at a fourth consecutive conference crown on Wednesday night with a 1-0 defeat of the home team in the Capital Athletic Conference Semifinals.

It was the first home loss for the Captains since 2017 and dropped the Captains overall record to 15-2-3 this season. The Eagles improved to 10-10-0 and will host the 2019 CAC Championship against #4-seed York (Pa.) on Saturday after the Spartans upset top-seeded Salisbury University earlier in the day Wednesday.

Mary Washington netted the gamewinner in the 73rd minute on a one-timer from Brooke Bauman for her fourth goal of the season. Corinne Carson let fly a cross from the right side that wound up connecting with Bauman's volley on the back post for the only score of the contest.

In goal, junior Haley Eiser made several sensational saves to make sure the Captains were still in the game throughout. Late in the first half, Eiser was faced with a hard shot from point blank range off the foot of Lindsey Hendrickson but the Captains' star keeper made a leaping save with her left hand. Before the goal was scored in the second half, Eiser again was forced to make a one-on-one save in a gritty moment as the ball slipped to Gracie Williams after a first attempt was blocked. Williams tried to hammer the shot by Eiser from close range, but the junior netminder stoned the attempt.

Eiser had five total saves in the game, including four in the second half.

The Captains were limited in offensive chances during the game as it was just the second game of the season Christopher Newport was outshot. The Eagles held a 15-9 advantage in total attempts including a 6-4 edge in shots on-goal. One of the best opportunities came after a corner kick in the first half when Carson Pokorny received a pass back to the corner by Riley Cook. Pokorny then crossed a pass into the box where senior Sydney Rife one-touched a floater toward the top of the goal, but the Mary Washington keeper leaped and denied the attempt.

Christopher Newport, ranked No. 2 in the most recent NCAA Regional Rankings, will now await the rest of the results of conference tournament play and will learn if they've done enough to earn an at-large berth into the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship. The selection show will be released on Monday, November 11 at NCAA.com.
