Beegle, Captains Head Into NCAA Women's Soccer Second Round With 2-0 Win Over Worcester State Saturday Night

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Senior Carson Pokorny made history with the game-wining assist and rookie Molly Beegle's header was enough for the seventh-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team to advance into the NCAA Division III Championship second round after a 2-0 win over Worcester State (11-8-2) Saturday night. Pokorny became the program's all-time leader in assists with her 32nd career helper on a beautiful corner kick dime to Beegle for the rookies' first career game-winning goal.

The nationally-ranked Captains improved to 16-2-3 overall on the season with the win and will advance to face 12th-ranked host Johns Hopkins at 7:00 pm on Sunday night in the second round.

Christopher Newport controlled the action moving forward throughout the contest and showed off how it's a team that ranks fourth nationally in shots per game this season. The Captains outshot the Lancers, 37-8, including a steep 14-5 advantage in attempts on-goal. Christopher Newport took 21 shots in the first half before peppering the Worcester State keeper with another 16 in the second.

While the total number of attempts continued to grow, Worcester State weathered the Captains fervent attack until the 61st minute when a 90-second span would prove to be the difference in the contest. First up was the historic game-winning goal from Pokorny to Beegle with 60:11 showing on the clock. With the senior stepping up and delivering the assist, Beegle moved in front of her defender, leaped and directed a pinpoint header into the left panel of the goal. Her fifth goal of the season stood up as her first career winner.

Pokorny's 32nd career assist moved her past Victoria Perry for sole possession of the record in Christopher Newport history. She also slipped by Dani Gunderson into sole possession of 8th all-time in career scoring with 72 career points.

Then with the seal broken, it was junior Madison Cochran who started the play a minute-and-a-half later when she backed down her defender, spun and drove to the goal line for a cross to the center of the goalmouth. Crashing home was senior Hailey Shaw, who one-touched her shot into the back of the netting for her fourth goal of the season. The midfielder has had a career year offensively for the Captains with 10 points on four goals and two helpers.

While the offense was impressive, forcing Worcester State keeper Ashley Spellman to make 12 saves in the contest, the Christopher Newport defense continued to showcase it's suffocating standard in postseason play.

Individually, senior defender Keiley McCarthy set the program record for games played in a career with her 86th, which also breaks Gabby Gillis' record for consecutive starts. McCarthy was joined by Shaye Doherty and Lulu Manley manning the back line for the majority of the contest while junior goalkeeper Haley Eiser made five saves in net to secure her 10th clean sheet of the season. The Christopher Newport defense has now logged 15 shutouts in 21 games this season, shattering the previous record of 12 blankings in a single season and ranking in the nation's top 15 for shutout percentage.

The Captains have now won at least one game in four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and will face off against the host Blue Jays on Sunday night. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available from Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.
