Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 7 Christopher Newport Women's Soccer Falls, 2-0, at No. 12 Johns Hopkins in NCAA Championship Second Round

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Christopher Newport offense was shut out for just the fourth time in the last three seasons as the 7th-ranked Captains suffered a 2-0 loss to No. 12 Johns Hopkins University (16-2-4) in the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship second round on Sunday night. The Captains conclude the season with a 16-3-3 overall record.

The Blue Jays picked up a pair of first-half goals to make up the difference against Christopher Newport. Maggie Coulson scored the eventual gamewinner in the 24th minute with an unassisted tally before Emily Maheras notched an insurance score in the 31st minute.

The high-powered Captains' offense was held to just three shots in the first half when Riley Cook and Ryanne Davidson had a pair of early attempts blocked by the Hopkins defense. Emily Talotta added one swing that went just wide in the 26th minute.

Despite the two goals allowed, junior goalkeeper Haley Eiser made three saves in the first half to keep the Captains in the game. She added two more in the second half to hold the score at 2-0. Offensively, the Captains ratcheted up their attack but still struggled to find quality chances on frame in the second half. Talotta sailed a couple of shots from long distance just wide and Riley Cook managed back-to-back attempts on frame in the middle stages of the period but had both stoned by the Hopkins goalkeeper.

Despite the second round loss, the Captains defense put together statistically the finest season in program history. Led by seniors Keiley McCarthy, Shaye Doherty, and juniors Lulu Manley and Montana Coward, the Christopher Newport defense finished the year with a 0.53 goals-against average and an .859 save percentage. Among the best in the nation this season, those figures rank at the top of the all-time single season charts in Christopher Newport lore. Eiser did the bulk of the work between the pipes for the Captains during the historic season, which saw Christopher Newport record a record 15 shutouts.

The offense also impressed statistically in 2019, ranking sixth all-time in points and goals scored. Sunday's outlier came after Christopher Newport had played 66 games over the last three years, scoring at least one goal in 62 of them.

The Captains will graduate a senior class of seven players including four starters. In addition to McCarthy and Doherty, the defensive midfield will lose Sydney Rife and the attack will suffer the subtraction of Carson Pokorny, the program's all-time leader in assists. Midfielder Hailey Shaw, who scored in Saturday's first round, midfielder Logan Montel, and goalkeeper Maddy Belanger, who saw action at the end of Sunday's matchup, round out the winningest class in program history. Over the last four seasons, the seniors won three conference championships, became the first group to reach the NCAA Tournament in every year of their careers, and won seven postseason games.
