NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University Volleyball secured an undefeated Capital Athletic Conference record with a 25-11, 25-18, 25-13 victory over Salisbury University, who is ranked 10th in the NCAA Mid Atlantic regional rankings. CNU's record improves to 23-7 10-0 while Salisbury falls to 15-9, 5-5.
CNU wasted no time establishing their dominance on the night as they went ahead 7-2 and 11-3. They would lead by no fewer than six points the rest of the way.
The second set proved to be more competitive in the early going with the Sea Gulls jumping ahead 8-6 after a four-point run, but the Captains responded in kind with their own 4-0 run to go ahead 10-8. With CNU ahead 18-4, they rattled off another four-point spurt to push the advantage to eight, 22-14, and would lead by at least six for the remainder.
The third set started much the same as the first as Salisbury managed a 6-4 lead, but yet another four-point run gave CNU an 8-6 lead. The Sea Gulls kept it within three at 13-10, but nine of the next 11 went in favor of the Captains as they built an insurmountable 22-12 lead.
Katie Piper posted 15 points on 12 kills and three aces.
Riley Garrison recorded 10 points courtesy of nine kills and a solo block.
Megan O'Hara added 9.5 points via eight kills and two blocks.
Sammy Carroll registered 29 assists, three aces, seven digs, two blocks, and two kills.
Katie Crofford tallied five kills and six digs.
Rebecca Frey tacked on 17 digs, an ace, and five assists.
Salisbury's Amanda Chew, who came into the contest with CAC-highs of 4.4 points and 3.77 kills per set, was limited to just six points on six kills with a -.087 hitting percentage. Additionally, Jenna Feinauer entered the contest with a CAC-best 0.99 blocks per set but recorded just one assisted block. Also, Blair Pausic was limited to just 15 total assists after coming into the match averaging 8.43 per set.
CNU hit .376 for the match with just seven errors while Salisbury mustered just a .070 attack percentage with a .000 output in the first set and -.062 in the third. Christopher Newport also led 7-2 in aces, 5-2 in blocks, 39-21 in kills, and 42-32 in digs.
CNU returns to the court on Saturday for a pair of matches starting at noon with Virginia Wesleyan University followed with a 2 p.m. tilt with Averett University.
