No. 12 Captains Drop 1-0 Decision against Lynchburg in Defensive Slugfest at Liberty Field Hockey Complex

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- In a back-and-forth defensive slugfest, the 12th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team came out on the short end as the Captains dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision against Lynchburg during a non-conference battle on Sunday afternoon at the Liberty Field Hockey Complex.

With scoring opportunities at a premium, the Hornets were able to find the back of the cage in the 13th minute before hanging on for the shutout victory. Keeping Christopher Newport within reach throughout the game, Olivia Davis came through with several highlight-reel saves while finishing with six total stops.

Along with Davis, the Captains helped quiet the high-powered Lynchburg attack with a solid showing on the back line. Blanketing the field, the defense limited the opposition to only seven on-target shots and 11 total attempts during the game.

With the setback, Christopher Newport falls to 8-3 on the season, while Lynchburg improves to an identical 8-3 record. The victory marked the third of the season for the Hornets at the Liberty Field Hockey Complex, including a 4-3 triumph against No. 2 Rowan last Sunday.

In the first quarter, the Captains opened the action by putting quick pressure on the Lynchburg defense. Earning a pair of corners in the first three minutes, Courtney Fiest had an on-target rip turned away by the goalie, while Sarah Mueller blistered one that just sailed wide.

After brushing aside the early rally by Christopher Newport, Lynchburg orchestrated a lengthy offensive stand in the middle of the period. Izzy Diz did solid work to stem the tide as the sophomore deflected a ball along the end line before cutting off an angle and riding an attacker through the zone, which forced an off-target shot.

Still pressuring, the Hornets earned a collection of corners in the latter half of the stanza. On an initial attempt, Rachel Cooke raced out of the cage to knock away a centering feed at the top of the circle before another shot sailed high. Moments later, after Davis swatted away a loose ball that dangerously crept through the zone, Lynchburg earned another corner in the 13th minute and took advantage with the first goal of the game.

Staring at a deficit, Christopher Newport nearly responded seconds later. Off the restart, Fiest sailed a rocket into the circle, and Abby Asuncion secured possession. Cracking a blast from close range, the freshman had her attempt turned aside with a diving save at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, Lynchburg continued pressuring the Captains. Less than a minute into the stanza, Davis hit the turf and made two tremendous saves. First, she swatted away a blast with her stick before swallowing another attempt with her body to keep the deficit at one.

Trying to find a rhythm on the other side of the field, Nyla Lewis won back possession with a tackle along the far sideline in the 19th minute. Keeping control, Marcella Sabbagh swiped away a Lynchburg clear at midfield before slicing a feed up to Mauri Ware, who pushed the ball into the circle. Shortly thereafter, Cooke sent a feed through the scoring area, but it just missed connecting with a stick as it floated past the left side of the cage.

Still attacking, Fiest worked her way into the circle and ripped a high-rising rocket that caught a defender and earned a corner with five minutes left in the half. After an insert by Ware, Fiest tried to capitalize, but her ensuing shot went screaming past the right post.

After withstanding Christopher Newport's advances, Lynchburg tried to close out the period on the offensive end. With four minutes remaining, the hosts earned a corner, but Davis kicked away a bouncer before Kennedy Johnson cleared it out the far side of the circle. Later, with less than two minutes left, Cooke handled a dangerous bouncer before handing possession back to the offense.

With seconds remaining in the opening half, Mueller connected with Ware, who possessed deep inside the circle. After the ball was jostled around a bit, Lewis took control at the top of the zone and fired a pass into a mass of humanity that gathered around the front of the cage. Unfortunately, the bouncer was unable to find a home as it trickled wide.

Entering halftime scoreless, the Captains tested the Lynchburg defense early in the third quarter. Flashing her top-end speed, Ware won a race to the ball inside the circle, beating three defenders before earning a corner. Unfortunately, Fiest's shot sailed wide to end the opportunity.

Continuing to surge, Asuncion dipped, dodged, and darted around a pair of defenders on the near side of the field before firing a backhand across the zone. Lewis had an opportunity on the other end, but Lynchburg quickly clamped down as the goalie hit the turf to smother the pointblank challenge.

Remaining active over the final half of the third quarter, Asuncion continued pestering the Hornets. She fired another backhand off a feed from Bailey Miller, but it was turned away by the keeper. Later, on the squad's final surge of the stanza, she possessed the ball in the right corner of the circle with a defender on her back. Trying to work her way towards the cage, she had a sliver of daylight, but a second ball dribbled onto the field and forced the referees to halt the play, effectively ending the squad's last opportunity of the period.

Entering the fourth quarter, Christopher Newport was hit with an early card and had to play 11-on-10 for two minutes, but Cooke did great work to handle the situation. Playing shorthanded, she stole two rollers in the center of the field before applying pressure to another Hornet, which forced an errant pass and gave possession back to the Captains.

Still looking to extend their lead, the hosts eventually regained control in the 48th minute on a rush up the field. Needing to make a play, Davis made a sprawling, out-stretched save on a bullet to knock the ball away before Diz cleared it out of the circle to prevent any rebound attempts.

Minutes later, Davis kicked away another blast by the Hornets and survived a deflection deep inside the zone, while Johnson helped clean up a subsequent surge with relentless pressure on the far side of the circle.

While the defense did its part, the offense attempted to break through with sustained pressure over the latter portion of the fourth quarter. Ware and Fiest ran a nice two-man game near the arc while weaving through three defenders to earn a corner in the 50th minute. Later, Mueller pushed inside and secured another corner following a rip from the far side, but Lynchburg handled both threats, including a game-saving stick save by the keeper off a laser from Fiest.

With time becoming the enemy, Mueller cut her way towards the circle and flipped a high attempt into the zone, but Asuncion just missed catching it with her stick. In the final minutes, Lewis pushed possession up the far sideline to Ware, who had a rally ended by the back line. Johnson also cracked a long hit into the circle, while Cooke stamped out a pair of clear attempts by the Hornets, but Lynchburg managed to hang on for the win.

Overall, Lynchburg held an 11-10 edge in shots, while Christopher Newport led the way in corners, 6-5. Along with Davis' six saves for the Captains, Laurel Nicks came through with a half dozen for the Hornets.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. when the Captains kick off Capital Athletic Conference play at home against Mary Washington.
