Volleyball Downs York on Senior Night

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Captains Volleyball wrapped up another sweep of a Capital Athletic Conference foe with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-17) victory over York College (Pa.) on Friday night. CNU is now 21-7 and 9-0 in the CAC whole York is 14-14, 3-6.

The opening set proved to be closely contested despite the score being in CNU's favor or tied for the entirety. Knotted at 16-16, Riley Garrison and Sammy Carroll combined for three kills and two assists for the next three points to go ahead for good at 19-16. York trimmed the deficit to 21-19, but three consecutive points put the Captains ahead 24-19. A CNU service error on the next play was followed up by a Mackenzie Wright kill for set point.

The second game got out of control in a hurry for York as CNU held leads of 6-1 and 13-4. York got some traction over the next few plays but still found themselves down by eight, 20-12. The Captains would go on to pick up five of the last seven points with the final two coming off a Riley Garrison and Megan O'Hara combo block and a solo rejection by Garrison.

York was the aggressor for much of the third set as they led by scores of 9-4 and 12-8, but from there it was CNU domination. Christopher Newport reeled off four straight points to tie the frame at 12-12, but a York kill briefly gave the lead back to the Spartans. That would be their last lead of the set as CNU once again picked up four consecutive points to go ahead 16-13. There was little drama from there as CNU tallied nine of the last 13 points to win, and all four of the point York scored in that stretch were off CNU service errors.

Katie Crofford posted team-highs of nine kills, 14 digs, and three aces. Mackenzie Wright tallied six blocks, two solo, to go with six kills. Megan O'Hara contributed eight kills and three blocks, one solo. Riley Garrison added five kills, for solo blocks, and five total blocks. Sammy Carroll totaled 27 assists, two aces, three kills, and four digs. Katie Piper tacked on five kills, two aces, two assists, three blocks, and four digs.

CNU hit .300 for the game while limiting the Spartans to a -.023 output. The Captains also held a 13-6 edge in blocks and an 8-4 advantage in aces.

Christopher Newport returns to the court on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Freeman Center vs. Washington and Lee University.
