NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport will welcome York College (Pa.) to the Freeman Center on Friday night at 7 p.m. for Senior Day and then Washington and Lee University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
CNU enters the weekend with a 20-7 overall record and an 8-0 mark in the Capital Athletic Conference while winning 17 of their last 18 matches. They are ranked fifth in the NCAA Mid Atlantic Region, joined by CAC members Mary Washington (10th) and Salisbury (11th).
York brings to Newport News a 14-13 overall record while checking in at 3-5 in the CAC.
The two teams met on September 27 where the Captains won 3-1, one of only two sets CNU has dropped in conference play.
Katie Crofford posted 14 kills and 15 digs while
Sammy Carroll dished out a career-high 45 assists with eight digs and two aces.
Katie Piper added 13 kills, nine digs, and two aces.
Rebecca Frey added 12 digs and two aces. Madyson Whitcomb led York with 13 kills and four blocks while Abby Diehl posted 31 assists, six digs, and three blocks. Emily Pupo had a match-high 18 digs.
The Generals hold a 21-5 record with an 8-3 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). They have won eight straight and are ranked fourth in the NCAA South Region.
CNU holds a 17-14 all-time record vs. W&L and has won four straight with the last matchup occurring in 2016. W&L last defeated the Captains in 2013.
Of the three teams, W&L leads in attack percentage at .234 followed by CNU at .228 and York .143, and the same order followed with kills at 13.07, 12.70, and 10.85. The Generals boast the top assist rate of 12.28 with CNU falling in line at 11.78 and York 10.14. The Captains prevail in service aces at 2.89 with York next at 2.26 and the Generals placing far behind in third at 1.47. York narrowly outpaces W&L in blocks, 1.91 to 1.89, while CNU isn't far behind at 1.80.
Katie Piper paces the Captains attack with 2.95 kills per set, good for fourth in the CAC while hitting .201.
Sammy Carroll is averaging a league-best 9.77 assists per set.
Katie Crofford checks in at 2.61 for fifth on .223 hitting.
Riley Garrison is averaging 2.35 kills per set to place ninth while hitting .315. Garrison's hitting percentage is the second-best in the Capital.
Mackenzie Wright checks in at fourth in the CAC in hitting percentage at .284.
The Captains boast six of the top 10 and seven of the top 12 servers in terms of service aces per set.
Rebecca Frey has a league second-best average of 0.53 aces per set.
Katie Crofford and Tiaralyn Mcbride follow in fourth at 0.49 while
Hope Webb is sixth at 0.47. Piper and Carroll round out the top 10 at 0.43 apiece, and
Kayleigh Reagan-Smith is 12th with 0.42.
Defensively, Frey is the top-ranked digger on the team at 3.39 per set. Piper falls just outside the top 10 with 2.60, ranking 11th, and Crofford comes in at 13th with 2.39. Garrison paces the squad in blocks with 0.81 per set for seventh in the CAC while Wright follows next in the league rankings at 0.79
For the Spartans, Madyson Whitcomb leads the team in kills at 2.29 per set to rank 10th in the Capital followed by Hannah Siaurusaitis in 11th at 2.21. However, Whitcomb has been out of action in the last five matches. Whitcomb leads the CAC in hitting percentage at .349 while Sydney Wilber is 10th with a rate of .232. Abby Diehl leads them in assists with 5.94, placing sixth in the league rankings. Lexi Daley places 10th at 3.38 and Gabby Emeigh 12th at 2.98.
Lydia Stump is the CAC leader in aces with 0.60 per set and Emeigh is sixth with 0.47.
Emily Pupo is the fourth-ranked digger in the Capital at 4.29 per set while Stump (2.53) and Diehl (2.33) come in 12th and 14th. Wilber and Whitcomb place second in the CAC in blocks with 0.94 each per set.
Washington and Lee is led by Brynne Gould's 4.05 kills per set. Val Sokolow posts 2.48 and Courtney Berry 2.43. Berry leads the team in attack percentage at .363 while Anna Soroka checks in at .313, Kiera Borthwick .260, Madeline Ferguson .245, and Brynne Gould .242. Soroka hands out 8.70 assists per set and Ashley Webb 5.61.
Caroline Gard has a team-high 0.34 aces per set followed by Ferguson at .30 and Soroka and Webb 0.25.
Gard also leads them in digs with 4.50 per set while Gould and Soroka average 3.17 and 2.32. Courtney Berry is their top rejecter with 1.02 per set while Katy Blain is posting 0.89. Ferguson averages 0.44 and Gould 0.43.
