BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Another Christopher Newport women's soccer game and another record-breaking performance by junior
Riley Cook. This time, the all-time leading scorer for the Captains set the single game scoring record with 9 points against Southern Virginia University (3-13-1, 1-7-0) while leading the 8th-ranked Captains to a 5-0 win on the road in Capital Athletic Conference play.
Cook, who had tied the program record for single game scoring twice prior, took sole possession of the record with a four-goal, one-assist performance against the Knights. Her effort came on 11 shots with eight on target in 76 minutes of action.
With the win, Christopher Newport improved to 14-1-2 overall and 7-1-0 in conference play. Southern Virginia fell to 3-13-1, 1-7-0.
Already the career and single season points record holder, Cook took down the single game scoring mark by factoring into all five scores on Wednesday night. She logged one goal in the first half while picking up three more and an assist in the span of just 21:09 in the second half. Additionally, she tacked on her 23rd career game-winning goal and surpassed the 50-point plateau for the second straight year.
The gold standard for scoring in Christopher Newport soccer lore, Cook picked up her game-winning strike in the 30th minute on another history-making play by the Captains. Senior
Carson Pokorny moved into a tie with Victoria Perry for most career assists with her 31st helper on the play, slotting a perfect pass into the box for Cook's one-touch goal. The play was started by
Keiley McCarthy up the left side of the field sending a long pass through the middle; rookie Jessica Zimmerman then played Pokorny onsides with a nice touch pass to the corner and the senior did the rest with a textbook pass to Cook on the near post.
Pokorny now has five assists this season after coming into the year with 26 career helpers. She has 69 career points on 19 goals and the record-tying 31 assists.
Southern Virginia managed to withstand the potent Captains attack for the remainder of the first half as Christopher Newport carried just a 1-0 advantage into the intermission. The visitors held an 8-1 advantage in total shots and a 7-0 lead in corner kick attempts as the Knights defense was bending, but not breaking.
Then, in the second half, Cook took over. Zimmermann assisted on a goal in the 66th minute by finding Cook in the middle of the box for the shot. In the 80th minute, rookie
Molly Beegle connected with Cook after a goal kick for a shot from 25 yards out that landed top shelf over the goalkeepers hands. With her third hat trick already in order for the Captains, Cook picked up an assist on rookie
Jill McDonald's score in the 86th minute to give the Captains a 4-0 lead. Finally, just over a minute later, the junior from Mechanicsville, Va. connected on another nice play from
Emily Talotta for her fourth goal of the game.
It is the third time this season Cook has scored as many as four goals in a game. Prior to 2019, only twice had a Captain scored four goals in a game. The single game scoring record had held at eight since being set by Allison Burr-Miller in 2003 and matched by Hillary Carney in 2006.
The second-half barrage led by Cook saw the Captains outshoot Southern Virginia 17-1 with a 9-1 advantage in shots on-goal. For the game, Christopher Newport owned the shot count 25-2 with a decided 12-2 advantage in shots on frame.
The Captains defense also tied the program record for shutouts in a season with their 12th clean sheet.
Haley Eiser picked up the shutout in goal with a pair of saves while
Shaye Doherty,
Keiley McCarthy,
Montana Coward and McDonald played the bulk of the minutes on the back line.
In addition to the historical performance statistically, the Captains also clinched a first-round by in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. With two games left to play, Christopher Newport holds a three-game advantage on York College of Pennsylvania, who they will face this Saturday, October 26 in their next game. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm against the Spartans.
