YORK, Pa. -- Three different players scored and the eighth-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team broke the single season record for shutouts with a 3-0 win at York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Captains improved to 15-1-2 overall with a 8-1-0 record in conference play while the Spartans fall to 7-11-0, 4-5-0.
Recording the team's 13th shutout of the season, the Captains set a new standard with their suffocating defense, holding York without a goal for just the third time in the last ten games. The previous record of 12 clean sheets was set in 2005 and matched in 2008, 2010, and 2017. This year's back line, led by seniors
Keiley McCarthy and
Shaye Doherty with juniors
Lulu Manley and
Montana Coward in the middle, has locked down opponents at a record-shattering pace with a .722 shutout percentage (13-18).
In Saturday afternoon's win, starting goalkeeper
Haley Eiser needed to make just two saves as the Captains' defense allowed only six total shots in the contest. The Spartans managed just two attempts in the first half and four more in the second.
Meanwhile, the Christopher Newport offense continued to hum with it's eighth multi-goal game in the last nine contests. Junior
Riley Cook reset her own single season record with her 26th goal of the season when she notched the game's opening tally. It would hold up as the game-winning goal, giving her seven on the season and a record 24 in her career. She ranks third among active Division III players in game-winning goals and the two players ranked ahead of her are both seniors (Josseline Williams, Dominican & Ashley St. Aubin, Augsburg).
Playing in front of a stout crowd of nearly 400, Cook lit up the scoreboard in the 26th minute when she collected a loose ball on the left wing, took a pair of touches and ripped a hard shot by the York goalkeeper. The score would remain 1-0 for nearly 40 minutes of game action into the second half before rookie
Molly Beegle and senior
Carson Pokorny extended the lead.
In the 63rd minute, freshman
Molly Beegle also scored an unassisted tally when she made a move by her defender in the box and finished inside the left post. Pokorny then picked up her second goal of the season with a header on an excellent cross off the goal line by
Emily Talotta. Talotta's 12th assist moved her into the top five in single season history at Christopher Newport. Pokorny slotted into a tie for eighth all-time with 71 career points, joining Dani Gunderson ('12).
Eiser gave way to senior goalkeeper
Maddy Belanger for the final ten minutes and the two shared the shutout. The effort lowered Christopher Newport's season goals-against average to 0.48 with just nine goals allowed this year.
Christopher Newport will close out the regular season with a pivotal game at home on Wednesday, October 30 as first-place Salisbury University travels to Captains Field. Kickoff against the Sea Gulls in the meaningful matchup is set for 7:00 pm.
