BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Over the last four seasons, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport defense has set and re-set nearly every program record for defense and will look to maintain that success on Wednesday night at Southern Virginia University (3-12-1, 1-6-0). The 8th-ranked Captains (13-1-2, 6-1-0) will kickoff against the Knights at 6:00 pm in Capital Athletic Conference action.
The Captains' back line and goalkeeper tandem has posted to a 0.54 goals-against average to this point in the season, good to sit atop the all-time chart. The program record was set in 2016, re-set in 2017, and then nearly matched again in 2018. Led by seniors
Shaye Doherty and this week's CAC Defensive Player of the Week
Keiley McCarthy, the Christopher Newport defense has allowed just nine goals in 16 games so far this season.
Goalkeeper
Haley Eiser has been shattering records in her two years as the starting goalkeeper and is now 31-3-2 all-time in her career between the pipes. She ranks fourth in career wins and despite just two years as the starter, ranks in the top ten of every career goalkeeping stat category.
Offensively, junior
Riley Cook is scoring at an unprecedented pace with 2.75 points per game this season. She has scored 21 goals and added two assists for 44 points, ranking second all-time only to her own program record established last season. Junior
Madison Cochran ranks second on the team with a career-high 18 points and the Captains feature six players with 10 or more points this year.
Christopher Newport has won all nine of the previous matchups against the Knights, posting a 9-0-0 overall record including a 3-0-0 record on the road. Southern Virginia enters Wednesday night's matchup on a four-game losing streak.
Leading the offense for Southern Virginia has been sophomore defender Tori Wescott with five goals and 10 points. No other SVU player has more than five points as Holly Cunha (2g, 1a) and Laurel Storheim (1g, 3a) have each posted five apiece.
For fans unable to make the trip to Buena Vista, Southern Virginia will provide live stats of the action kicking off at 6:00 pm.
Following the mid-week matchup, the Captains will head to Pennsylvania on Saturday for their final regular season road game as they take on York College (Pa.) at 3:30 pm.
