NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On Wednesday night, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team will entertain Southern Virginia University (2-14-0, 0-7-0) at 7:00 pm in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Captains come in looking for a bounceback win after the team's first league loss of the season with an overall record of 9-2-3 and 6-1-0 mark in CAC action.
In addition to the opportunity to erase the memory of an overtime setback at Mary Washington in their last contest, the Captains will also use Wednesday night's game to honor the Senior Class of 2019. Prior to the match, Christopher Newport will have a ceremony to honor the careers of this year's seniors.
The Captains have matched up against Southern Virginia seven times prior to Wednesday night, boasting a perfect 7-0-0 record and a 36-0 advantage in the all-time scoring column. SVU has dropped seven straight coming into the mid-week matchup while Christopher Newport is looking to rally after being blanked for just the second time this season.
The offense will be hungry after a run of six straight multi-goal performances was snapped. Christopher Newport, sitting in first place in the league standings, is outscoring opponents 16-4 in conference action this year including a 2-0 win against Southern Virginia on October 1.
Leading the attack has been sophomores
Lincoln Kickbush and
Will Collins with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Kickbush scored twice against the Knights in the season's first matchup to carry the Captains offense to the win. He ranks second on the team in scoring while Collins is third with four goals and two assists, respectively.
The only player with more points so far this season is senior defender
Derek Cook, who has scored 17 points on 6 goals and 5 assists. Cook has converted a record-tying 6-for-6 on penalty kicks this year to lead the way while also pitching in five assists. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Cook anchors a back line that has allowed only 11 goals in 14 games this season.
Southern Virginia has gotten multiple goals from sophomore Zach Martin and freshman Zander Budd. Martin has a team-high seven points on 3 goals and 1 assist; Budd has added two goals for four points.
