FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Showing off a wicked left foot from long range, sophomore
Ryanne Davidson scored the game-winning goal in the first half at Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon, lifting the 8th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team to a 1-0 road victory. The Captains improved to 13-1-2 overall, 6-1-0 in conference play while dropping Mary Washington to 6-9-0, 3-4-0.
The 1-0 win completed a season sweep against the Eagles after a 3-0 victory over Mary Washington on October 5.Â
The Captains saw several close chances fall just shy of paydirt in the first half including a one-on-one opportunity for leading scorer
Riley Cook in the 31st minute. A ball over the Mary Washington defense set her loose for a shot that easily scooted by the Eagles goalkeeper, but her shot was inches too far to the left and ricocheted off the left post. Rookie
Sarah Rhiel also ripped a shot just wide of the goal in the 36th minute after getting loose of her defender with a nice move on the ball.Â
Davidson made sure the close calls would not matter in the 35th minute when she received a pass from
Sydney Rife, turned on her defender and smoked a line drive into the high pocket in the center of the goal. Her shot cleared the outstretched hands of the leaping goakeeper and snuck in under the crossbar from about 30 yards out to give the Captains the lead, 1-0.Â
In the second half, the Eagles ratcheted up their offensive pressure and put four shots on goal against Christopher Newport junior goalkeeper
Haley Eiser. The All-Region netminder was up to the task each time and finished the game with saves. She earned her seventh shutout of the season in the process and improved to 13-1-2 as the Captains starting goalkeeper.Â
The Captains will travel to Southern Virginia on Wednesday night for their next game, kicking off against the Knights at 6:00 pm.
