Men's Soccer Captains Win Streak Snapped as Mary Washington Wins 1-0 in Overtime

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Just a minute and a half into the first overtime period, the host Mary Washington Eagles ended a scoreless draw with a game-winning goal against the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team, handing the Captains just their second loss of the season. The Captains fall to 9-2-3, 6-1-0 as a six-game winning streak comes to a close.

Mary Washington, ranked No. 21 in the nation according to the D3soccer.com Top 25, picked up a pivotal conference victory, 1-0, and improved to 10-3-2 overall, 5-2-0 in conference play.

Both teams traded opportunities in the first five minutes of the game as Jeremy Hokenson ripped a shot on frame for the Eagles, but Christopher Newport goalkeeper Justin Piercy picked up his first save of the day. On the Captains first solid run, it was sophomore Lincoln Kickbush who pressured Mary Washington keeper Kenny Kurtz with a hard shot on-frame.

The game would slow to a battle in the midfield after that as the next shot on-goal would not come for another 15 minutes when Cory Hogge headed an attempt toward the Mary Washington goalie. Will Collins would also add a header attempt in the 35th minute to round out the Captains' first-half chances.

The tussle would continue in the second half as neither team managed many quality chances. Idrissa Barrie and Gabriel Soriano took the only two shots on-goal for the Eagles and the Captains were held without a SOG despite four second-half corner kicks.

With the score still tied at the end of regulation, the home team would end the match just 1:25 into the extra time when Josh Everard passed across the goal mouth for a Pierre Richard finish. It was just the fourth goal surrendered by the Captains in conference play this season.

The evenly-matched battle saw Mary Washington edge the Captains, 8-7, in total shots with a 5-3 advantage in shots on target. Collins is the only player credited for multiple shots on the day for the Captains, with two.

Christopher Newport will look to bounce back with a home game next up, hosting Southern Virginia University on Wednesday, October 23 at 7:00 pm. The game will serve as Senior Night.
