No. 23 Captains Spread the Ball Around in 4-0 Shutout Over Southern Virginia on Senior Night

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Nine different players registered at least one point in a 4-0 shutout victory over Southern Virginia (2-15-0, 0-8-0) on Wednesday night as the 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team showcased the depth of it's offense in Capital Athletic Conference play. No player impacted more than one score as four different goal scorers were assisted by five different players on the night.

With the win, Christopher Newport bounced back and maintained it's lead atop the conference standings with a 10-2-3 overall record and a 7-1-0 mark in league play. The Captains outshot the Knights, 34-5, in the contest with 18 attempts on frame.

Consistently pressuring the Southern Virginia back line, the Captains also earned 13 corner kicks while holding the Knights without a single attempt from the corner. Jacob Solis made 13 saves and a defender cleared a 14th off the line for the Knights while he allowed four goals in the game.

The first score for Christopher Newport came in the 12th minute of action on a spectacular sliding play from senior Michael Wilson. Playing in one of his final home games, Wilson notched his first goal of the season for the game-winning strike off an assist by Cory Hogge. Hogge got loose down the right side and lofted a hard cross into the middle where Wilson was sprinting side-by-side with his defender; he went to the ground and connected with a hard shot into the top of the goal.

Just minutes later, a nearly identical goal was scored by the Captains to take a 2-0 lead when Davis Pillow connected on his second goal of the year. A nice combination play was started by Pillow as the defender ran up the middle of the field with the ball. He dumped a pass off to Will Collins and raced by him into the box as Collins spun and played a ball into the corner for Justin Wilson. The junior played another picture-perfect cross into the middle of the box where Pillow was home to put away the shot for the goal.

The Captains carried a 2-0 lead into halftime with a 14-3 advantage in total shots. That lead would remain the same until the 73rd minute when rookie Brendan Todd picked up his first career score off a pass from fellow freshman Sam Dickinson. Like the two goals before it, the finish was contentious as Todd raced into the near post with two defenders swallowing him, but he connected to increase the lead to 3-0.

Finally, Gabe Splett put in his first goal of the season off a nice feed from junior midfielder Gabo Caicedo in the 78th minute. From midfield, Caicedo played a long through ball behind the Southern Virginia defense and Splett raced to the ball. He got a touch on it before the goalkeeper could get to it and sent his shot into the right side of the goal for his first career score.

With the lead, head coach Justin Chezem was able to honor the bulk of his seniors playing on Senior Night. Getting into the action alongside starters Wilson, Derek Cook, Khari Jones, and Justin Piercy was Michael Pelletier and Jared Dorman. Pelletier came in on the defensive end and Dorman, the long-time team manager for the Captains, suited up on the attack for Christopher Newport. Also honored in the pregame ceremony was injured senior David Eddleton, who continues to support the Captains from the sidelines.

Christopher Newport will return to action this Saturday, October 26 as they travel to York (Pa.) for their final road game of the regular season. Kickoff against the Spartans is slated for 7:00 pm.
