FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team heads back out on the road for three straight starting on Saturday, October 19 as the No. 8 Captains take on the University of Mary Washington (6-8-0, 3-3-0). Kickoff against the Eagles is slated for Noon with live stats and live video available.
The game is being played as the front end of a conference doubleheader with the men's teams, scheduled to kickoff immediately following the women's matchup at 2:30 pm.
The Captains are coming off a 7-0 dismantling of St. Mary's (Md.) in Capital Athletic Conference action, bouncing back from their first loss of the season with authority. It marked the sixth consecutive multi-goal performance for the 11th-ranked scoring offense in the nation, averaging 3.87 goals per game. Mary Washington also won big on Wednesday, picking up an 8-0 victory against Southern Virginia University.
Earlier this season, Christopher Newport picked up a 3-0 win against the Eagles to improve to 10-4-1 all-time in the series. The Captains have won six straight and nine of the last 10 bouts. In the first matchup of the year, Mary Washington could not solve sophomore
Emily Talotta as the midfielder assisted on all three goals in the game.
Madison Cochran scored twice and
Molly Beegle added one in the shutout win that saw Christopher Newport outshoot the Eagles, 34-6.
This season, Cochran ranks second and Talotta third with 18 and 16 points, respectively. Cochran has delivered a career-high seven goals and four assists while Talotta has led the Captains with 10 assists in her first season in Newport News. Ranking second in helpers is senior defender
Keiley McCarthy, with five, and the veteran also tacked on her first goal of the season in Wednesday night's win against St. Mary's.
Mary Washington featured seven different goal scorers in their 8-0 win against Southern Virginia on Wednesday night. Abby Zimmerman scored twice to lead the way. On the season, senior Brielle Mitchell has impacted the offense the most with 12 points on 4 goals and 4 assists while rookie Amanda Krest has also put away four goals while adding two assists for 10 points.
The road trip Saturday kicks off a run of three straight games away from Captains Field for the 8th-ranked Captains as they travel to Southern Virginia and York following the Fredericksburg jaunt.
