No. 17 Captains Head to Mary Washington Saturday for Men's Soccer Conference Action

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's soccer team will look to keep up it's winning ways on Saturday as the 17th-ranked Captains carry a six-game win streak into a Capital Athletic Conference road matchup at Mary Washington (9-3-2, 4-2-0). Kickoff against the Eagles is slated for 2:30 pm as part of a doubleheader with the women's teams.

The Saturday tilt will wrap up the season series against Mary Washington after the Captains picked up a 2-0 win at home earlier in the month. At the time, the Eagles were ranked No. 11 in the nation as Christopher Newport picked up their third straight win with the shutout. With the victory, the Captains improved to 24-19-4 all-time against the in-state foe.

For fans who cannot make the trip to Fredericksburg, live stats and a live video webcast will be provided by the University of Mary Washington department of athletics. Links to both can be found on the men's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.

The Captains will enter the game with one of the longest active win streaks in the nation, capturing six straight victories to start conference play. Christopher Newport has outscored league opponents 16-3 including a 4-1 victory at St. Mary's (Md.) in their last outing on Wednesday. Senior Derek Cook scored twice while Will Collins and Lincoln Kickbush each added goals in the win.

For the season, Cook has helped lead the team on both ends of the field. Going a perfect 6-for-6 from the penalty spot, he leads the team in scoring with 17 points on 6 goals and 5 assists. Defensively, he anchors a veteran group that has allowed just ten goals in 13 games played. Kickbush, primarily coming off the bench, has been the top goal scorer with seven all coming in the run of play. He has 16 points after adding a pair of helpers.

Mary Washington enters Saturday's game coming off a 6-0 win at Southern Virginia. The Eagles are 2-2-0 over their last four games with the loss to the Captains and a 1-0 road setback at York surrounding a pair of dominant wins over the Knights. The defense continues to be the highlight of the team, allowing just seven goals in 14 games this season. Junior Ken Kurtz has played the bulk of the minutes in goal for the Eagles, posting a 0.56 goals-against average in 13 starts. Offensively, senior Jacob Lovinger leads the wa with six goals and three assists for 15 points.

Following the weekend matchup in Fredericksburg, the Captains will return home Wednesday, October 23 to host Southern Virginia University for Senior Night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
