LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Playing on a rain-soaked night at the Shellenberger Classic on the University of Lynchburg campus, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team forced overtime against the 21st-ranked host Hornets, but suffered a 1-0 loss in extra time on Saturday night. The Captains fall to 3-2-0 on the season while Lynchburg escaped the weekend undefeated at 4-0-0.
A physical match between the two regional rivals was played to a scoreless draw through regulation, while the Captains held a 5-2 advantage in shots on-goal. In extra time, however, the Captains' allowed one shot on frame and it would prove to be the gamewinner as Abibi Osman notched his fourth goal of the weekend to send Lynchburg to victory.
In the first half, CNU outshot the Hornets, 4-3, including an early shot on target from junior
Jordan Boone and then one from rookie
Ethan Larson in the final moments. With a 0-0 draw through the first 45 minutes, the teams had already combined for 17 fouls.
An early surge offensively in the second half featured three shots on goal. Boone picked up his second of the day and senior
Teig Lesko also tested Lynchburg's Dylan McLaurin in the first seven minutes of the second stanza. On the other end, CNU keeper
Zach Pedini saved Dan Friedberg's attempt in the 51st minute.
In the 72nd minute it appeared the home team might have taken a 1-0 lead after Pedini saved a shot by Friedberg, but saw the rebound knocked by him into the back of the net; the officials whistled the Hornets for being offsides and the score remained empty.
The contentious battle continued into extra time, where CNU's
Stephen Durbin got a good look that was blocked, setting up a pair of corner kicks by the Captains. The team couldn't get anything off the set pieces though, and Lynchburg escaped. Then, Jack Ashby picked up a red card for Lynchburg in the 97th minute, giving CNU a man advantage the rest of the way. Before CNU could take advantage of the extra man, though, the Hornets managed to find the game-winning goal from Osman.
The lone tally of the game came in the 98th minute with just 1:36 remaining in the first overtime period. Osman was unassisted for the score.
The Captains will look to shake off an 0-2 weekend at the Shellenberger Classic when they return home to face Randolph College on Wednesday, September 12. That game will kick off at 5:00 pm as part of a doubleheader with the women's team, who will face Virginia Wesleyan at 7:30 pm.
