LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's soccer team suffered it's second consecutive overtime setback to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent on Wednesday evening, dropping a 2-1 decision against the Generals. The Captains (3-3-0) outshot the home team, 22-12, including nine shots on-goal, but could not overcome W&L in non-conference action.
The Generals improved to 2-3-0 on the season with the overtime winner. The winning goal was scored short-handed, as Washington & Lee was playing with just 10 men on the field after a red card in the 65th minute led to CNU's lone goal on a penalty kick.
The team's played to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes of action, with both taking six shots apiece. In the second, however, the Captains' offense fired 13 shots on the Washington & Lee goalkeeper, including five on frame, while the CNU defense held the Generals to just a single SOG.
Unfortunately for the Captains, that one shot on-goal found the back of the net as Will Hamryka connected on a one touch shot to the far post after a heel pass from Viktor Dolberg. That tally came just over three minutes into the second stanza and gave the home team the first advantage of the game.
Later in the period, rookie center back Seth Chapman picked up a red card that gave the Captains a man advantage for the remainder of the game. On a penalty kick attempt to tie the game, junior midfielder
David Eddleton stepped in and delivered his second PK goal of the year and third total score. The equalizer forced momentum firmly in CNU's direction, as the Captains' offense continued to pepper Generals' rookie goalkeeper Michael Nyc.
Senior
Stephen Durbin took five shots, putting five on-goal, and five more CNU players issued shots on frame. One of CNU's top chances came as the clock expired in regulation as a loose ball found
Tanner Dail open in the middle of the box, but his shot, which may have not made the buzzer anyway, sailed just inches wide of the goalmouth.
In overtime, the Generals held off the surging CNU offense long enough to pick up the winning goal in the 98th minute of play. Dylan Ritch hit the post on a shot off a free kick and the rebound landed right at the feet of teammate Jack Rawlins. Rawlins connected quickly for the goal and the home team celebrated the win.
CNU took 22 shots, putting 9 on frame, while holding W&L to 12 shots, 4 on net.
The Captains will look to end it's three-game slide whent hey travel to Lycoming College on Saturday, September 22 for a 2:00 pm match.
