NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University football squad hits the road for the first time in 2018 on Saturday, as the Captains take on the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Lewis C. Everett Stadium in Hampden-Sydney, Va.
Art Link's team is 1-0 following a season-opening victory last Saturday over Southern Virginia at POMOCOÂ Stadium, 38-9. The Tigers of H-SC are 0-1 after losing last Sunday at Averett, 33-14, in a game that moved to Sunday from Saturday due to poor weather in Danville, Va. While the Captains turned the ball over only once in their 29-point triumph, the Tigers suffered five turnovers in their 19-point setback.
"It's a key statistic, that's for sure," Link said. "We are always focused on limiting our turnovers, and did a pretty good job of that last week. On the road this week, we're going to have to be disciplined and not make mistakes like turnovers and penalties if we expect to win."
Christopher Newport beat Hampden-Sydney last year at POMOCOÂ Stadium, 20-7, and the all-time series is now even at 3-3. CNU has taken the last two matchups with the Tigers, and won in Hampden-Sydney two years ago, 45-27.
CNU starting quarterback, junior
Jack Anderson, is coming off a 23 of 38 performance last Saturday. He threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half against the Knights. His lone interception was the only turnover of the night for the Captains. Senior receiver
Kyree Burton caught five passes for 108 yards, including a 37-yard scoring strike from junior receiver
Nick Hunter, who became the first CNU player ever to throw and catch a touchdown pass in a game.
The defense excelled in week one for CNU, allowing just nine points and 159 total yards to the Knights. Southern Virginia attempted to run the ball 31 times, compiling just 42 net yards for the night.Â
Hampden-Sydney quarterback, senior Alec Cobb, was picked off twice in the opener for the Tigers. He connected on 33 of 53 attempts for 330 yards and a touchdown.
The battle, the only non-conference game of the season for the Captains, will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m. The game will be the first of two straight on the road for the Captains, who will then travel to Frostburg State for a 7:00 p.m. game on Saturday, September 15th. All eight games left on the schedule after Saturday will be New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
