Khari Jones Nets Thrilling Double Overtime Winner As CNU Downs Penn State Harrisburg, 1-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The first career goal for CNU's Khari Jones will not soon be forgotten by the junior, as the Captains' defender won Saturday night's battle against Penn State Harrisburg in double overtime with a header in the 103rd minute of play. The Captains (4-4-0, 1-0-0) opened Capital Athletic Conference play with a thrilling 1-0 victory at home, snapping an 11-game season-opening win streak for the previously undefeated Lions (11-1-0, 0-1-0).

The shutout victory for CNU was the sixth straight Captains' game decided by one goal, and ended a four-game slide. It was also the fourth straight overtime game played by CNU, marking the longest streak of overtime games since 1989 when CNU played in five straight.

Jones put away the game's lone tally early in the second overtime period off a gorgeous assist from Michael Wilson. Just over two minutes into the second OT, Wilson got loose in the left corner. He touched the ball to himself toward the goal line before connecting on a left-footed cross into the center of the box. Unmarked by a defender, Jones elevated and powered a header off the bottom of the crossbar and into the goal, sending Captains Field into a celebratory frenzy.

The shot by Jones was the 15th in the game by CNU, who outshot the Lions 15-1 with five shots on-frame. The pressure mounted against sophomore goalkeeper Nicholas Guglielmetti in the second half when CNU earned six corner kicks and took 10 shots. The best chance for either team in regulation was one of those attempts, as rookie Cory Hogge took a free kick in the 77th minute. Hogge, set up in the center of the field about 25 yards out, blistered a hard shot around the wall and forced the Harrisburg netminder to make a stunning diving save.

The Captains defense put together a stout performance in the victory, led by senior Bobby Seifert. Davis Pillow, Daniel Hulett, Hogge, and Jones made up the rest of the back line in front of senior goalkeeper Zach Pedini. Pedini needed to make just one save to secure the shutout, playing all 102:29 between the pipes for CNU. It was his first solo clean sheet of the season and ninth career shutout, moving him into the top ten all time.

CNU improved to 3-0 on the season in home games but will hit the road for another big streak of games away from Captains Field. Five of the next six matchups will be played on the road, including three straight starting with Wednesday's matchup at Virginia Wesleyan University. Kickoff against the Marlins is slated for 7:30 pm.
