VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- A stifling defensive effort highlighted a 3-0 shutout at Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday night, as the Christopher Newport men's soccer team ended a streak of four straight overtime games. The Captains improved to 5-4-0 and Marlins fall to 1-9-0 this season after the CNU back line held the home team to just three shots in the game.
Leading the spectacular defensive showing, as he has consistently for the last four years, was senior center back
Bobby Seifert. The senior leader started his 67th consecutive game, tying CNU Athletics Hall of Famer Shadi Abi-Saab for ninth on the all-time list at CNU.
With Seifert, the starting back line of
Davis Pillow,
Daniel Hulett, and
Cory Hogge helped keep senior goalkeeper
Zach Pedini out of harm's way throughout the contest. Defensive midfielder
Andrew Maeso also had a strong showing before the group gave way to the reserves with a big lead in the second half.
Pedini earned the shutout without ever facing a shot on frame. The Marlins were held to three shots, all in the first half and all off target. The senior goalkeeper's second solo shutout of the season dropped his season's goals-against average to 1.11.
On the other end of the field, CNU registered it's fourth game of the season with at least three goals scored. Leading the charge was junior
Jordan Boone, scoring twice, including the eventual gamewinner in the 48th minute of play. Senior leader
Stephen Durbin added his fourth goal of the season on a set piece in the 54th minute to round out the scoring.
Boone got things started early in the second half when he registered an unassisted tally after a scramble in the box. A free kick taken by the Captains was put in the middle of a host of bodies in the box, and when the ball squirted loose, Boone got to it first and shot far post for the score. Just minutes later, Durbin added the insurance tally on another free kick. From about 30 yards out, the Captains' leading scorer smashed a perfectly placed shot into the back of the net.
The last goal came in the final minute of action when Boone scored his second on his own rebound. The first shot was saved by Wesleyan goalkeeper Walter Morris, but Boone got to the second opportunity and finished for his first career multi-goal game.
The Captains outshot their cross-water rivals by a final count of 17-3, including an 8-0 advantage in shots on-goal. CNU earned nine corner kicks while the Captains' defense thwarted any chance of the Marlins' getting set in their own zone.
CNU will stay on the road for their next game, traveling to Frostburg State University for Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday, October 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm from Maryland.
