FROSTBURG, Md. -- Despite the Captains outshooting the Frostburg State Bobcats by a final tally of 19-7, a late goal in the final two minutes of regulation was enough to stun Christopher Newport men's soccer in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday night. The Captains fall to 5-5-0, 1-1-0 in league action, while Frostburg State improves to 4-7-1, 1-1-0.
Christopher Newport controlled most of the offensive action in the game, taking 19 total shots and putting five on-frame. CNU had a decided advantage in the second half, outshooting the Bobcats 14-3 after halftime, including a 4-1 edge in shots on-goal.
The one shot on-goal allowed by the CNU defense, though, found the back of the net in the 89th minute of play. Willie Jefferson found Blake Geatz for the attempt and slipped a shot by CNU goalkeeper
Zach Pedini with just 1:15 left on the clock.
Faced with short time, the Captains were unable to equalize and the home team stung the Captains in conference action, as CNU suffered it's fifth loss of the season by just one goal.
Stephen Durbin and
Jordan Boone led the offense with three shots each, including one on-frame.
Daniel Zeitoun registered a pair, with one on-net, while
Andrew Maeso and
Davis Pillow each challenged the Frostburg State goalkeeper with one attempt on goal.
The FSU goalkeeper, Joel Assal, stoned all five shots on-frame for the home team to earn the shutout. Pedini made three saves while allowing just the one goal.
The Captains will return to action on Wednesday, October 10 as they travel to Southern Virginia University for another conference matchup. Kickoff against the Knights is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
