BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Playing in the rain at Knight Stadium, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team picked up a shutout victory in Capital Athletic Conference action with a 3-0 win at Southern Virginia. The Captains (6-5-0, 2-1-0) were led by sophomore
Justin Wilson, who factored into all three goals on Wednesday night.
Wilson had a career-high night with two goals and an assist to lead the dominating offensive performance. CNU outshot the Knights, 28-1, and held the conference foe without a shot on-goal. With the loss, Southern Virginia fell to 1-13-0, 0-3-0.
The Captains scored two in the first half to take the lead on the Knights, 2-0, at the break. Rookie
Tanner Dail finished the eventual game-winning goal on a combination play in front of the goal.
Michael Wilson and
Justin Wilson connected for a cross in from the corner to find Dail in the middle of the box. He finished into the right side of the goal for his second career goal.
Under five minutes later in the 33rd minute of action, Wilson got a cross from
Lincoln Kickbush and finished on his first goal. At halftime, CNU was leading the shot count, 14-1, and had put five shots on-frame.
CNU tacked on the third and final goal in the 63rd minute when Wilson scored on an unassisted tally from 25 yards out. He smashed a hard shot into the bottom right corner of the goal for his second of the contest and third goal of the year. His five-point performance matches the season high for any CNU player and is the most points scored in a game since
Stephen Durbin scored seven last season against Wesley (Sep 30).
The Captains will return to action on Saturday, October 13 for Senior Night against the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans with kickoff slated for 7:00 pm.
