Â
Christopher Newport is coming off of a 3-0 victory over York (Pa.) in the squad's Capital Athletic Conference opener on Saturday. Against the Spartans,
Katie Piper recorded her fourth consecutive double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs. Meanwhile,
Abby Oren clubbed 10 kills while hitting at a .389 clip, and
Katie Crofford matched her career-high with 17 digs.
Â
Along with the veteran contributors, freshman
Lauren Tracy continued to star as well. On Saturday, she registered her fourth straight 40-assist match after dishing out 40 helpers against the Spartans. That stands as the longest run of 40-assist outings since former All-American Alyssa Kidd also notched four straight to cap off her decorated career in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
Â
So far this season, Piper ranks second in the CAC with a 3.00 kills-per-set average, while
Mackenzie Wright is fourth with a 0.88 blocks-per-set rate. On the back row,
Josie Lucernoni is averaging 4.08 digs per frame, which places her sixth in the conference. She, Crofford, and
Allie Plumlee have also excelled on serve-receive with all three Captains boasting reception percentages above .930.
Â
On the other side of the court, William Peace comes into the contest riding an eight-match winning streak. The Pacers have been led by Emily Braxton, who leads the USA South with a 5.82 digs-per-set average. That rate also ranks 10th in the NCAA. Her efforts have helped WPU limit opponents to a .077 hitting percentage, which stands as the eighth-best mark in the country.
Â
Along with Braxton, the Pacers have also received top-notch efforts from Brienna Laskowski this season. The sophomore has collected three triple-doubles, which ranks as the fourth most in the NCAA. She is coming off of a 21-kill, 21-assist, 14-dig showcase against Salem on Saturday. Additionally, Mya Parks leads William Peace with a 3.00 kills-per-set average this season.
Â
In 27 all-time meetings between the two programs, CNU sports a perfect 27-0 record. The Captains notched a 3-0 victory last year behind 15 assists and four aces from
Ashley Burgess and 10 digs by Lucernoni.
