NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Rookie
Mason Kolls defeated a pair of Division I opponents en route to a perfect 6-0 start to his collegiate career this weekend, leading the Captains' men's tennis performance at the CNU Invite. As a team, the Captains captured 13 wins in singles and six in doubles.Â
Kolls won the Flight C title in both singles and doubles, posting matching 3-0 records in his first career appearance. In singles, he started with a win over Hampton University junior Basil Post (6-3, 6-0). In the semifinals, he defeated teammate
James Baron (6-3, 6-4) and on Sunday's flight final, he took down Norfolk State's Ignacio Guevel (6-1, 6-2).Â
The freshman paired with fellow rookie
Paul Baron in doubles for another win over a Division I opponent when they took down Buck and Thompson from Hampton University, 8-4. They also earned wins over
Mitch Brody and
Bryce Coleman from CNU, 8-5, and CNU'sÂ
Dominic Lacombe and
James Baron, 8-4.Â
Also earning wins in the Flight C singles bracket was
Mitch Brody,
James Baron,
Bryce Coleman and
Paul Baron. Coleman's win came against a Division I foe as well, dropping Post in the consolation bracket 7-5, 6-1.Â
CNU also had a strong showing in Flight B, where rookie
Ryan Macy reached the championship match in singles. He defeated Flavian Fernandez from Norfolk State (6-4, 6-2) in the quarterfinals and Louis Proulx from Chowan University in the semifinals (6-1, 6-2). Chowan senior Mariano Yeh outlasted Macy in the final, but the rookie impressed in his first weekend against competition from higher levels of NCAA play.Â
The Captains will now pivot their focus back to strictly Division III competition as they prepare for the 2018 ITA Southeast Regional Championships next weekend. CNU will travel to Fredericksburg, Va. to face the regional field starting on Friday, September 28.Â
