NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team took the courts for the first time in 2018-19 on Saturday, September 22 hosting the CNU Invite. A two-day event on the Eyre Courts at Christopher Newport, CNU opened up play with a strong showing on the first day.
Rookies
Ryan Macy and
Mason Kolls had strong collegiate debuts, as the pair went 2-0 in singles play to set up appearances in Sunday's flight finals. Kolls defeated a player from Hampton University, 6-3, 6-0, in the opener before taking down teammate
James Baron in the semifinals of Flight C, 6-3, 6-1. Macy defeated Norfolk State's Flavian Fernandez, 6-4, 6-2, in his first match before downing a Chowan opponent in the semifinals of Flight B, 6-2, 6-2.
Dominic Lacombe also advanced to the semis of Flight B with a win over Hampton's Thompson (7-6 (1), 6-3) and
Mitch Brody captured a 1-1 mark in Flight C with a win over Chowan's Froelich (6-1, 6-0).
Andy Mason also earned one win playing in Flight A, defeating Fernandez (6-2, 6-2) to earn a spot in the third-place match on Sunday.
In doubles play, a pair of CNU tandems earned first round victories. In Flight B, Mason and Macy paired up for an 8-3 win and in Flight C,
Paul Baron and Kolls matched up for an 8-5 win.
The CNU Invite will conclude on Sunday.
