Captains Cruise Behind Second Consecutive Six-Goal Performance; CNU Men's Soccer Downs Pfeiffer, 6-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior Stephen Durbin scored the game-winning goal less than two minutes into the match and finished the day with a 5-point performance to lead the CNU men's soccer team in a 6-0 win over Pfeiffer University (1-1-0) on Sunday afternoon. Durbin scored twice and added an assist to lead the way in the team's second straight six-goal performance to open the season.

After capturing a 6-1 win over Greensboro College on Friday night, the powerful CNU offense was on display again on Sunday against the former Division II Falcons from Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer is currently in the process from transitioning from Division II to Division III.

With the win, the Captains improve to 2-0-0 early this season while Pfeiffer falls to 1-1-0.

CNU scored three goals in each half in a dominating offensive performance, including Durbin's winner coming in the first two minutes. For the second straight game, Durbin got the Captains on the board quickly when he received a long pass out of the defense from Daniel Hulett. Hulett's ball bounced near the top of the box and over the last defender, allowing Durbin's first touch to loft the keeper with a high-arcing shot into the back corner of the goal.

Durbin factored into all three goals in the first half as he added an assist on the second goal. With the ball down the left side, Jordan Boone turned back and slid a pass across the top of the box to Durbin, who then found Zachary Ballard streaking down the right side with a through ball. The senior midfielder finished into the left side of the goal to give CNU a 2-0 lead in the 13th minute of action.

It was less than a minute later when Durbin connected on his second goal of the game and third of the season. Again it was Hulett who found the senior forward in the middle of the box, where Durbin just needed to beat the keeper for the goal.

While the offense surged on one end of the field, the Captains defense allowed just three shots in the first 45 minutes. None of those attempts were on frame as senior Bobby Seifert, junior Derek Cook, and sophomores Davis Pillow and Hulett locked down the back line. Cook would also get in on the offensive end early in the second half when he connected for his second goal of the short season.

Ona corner kick taken by Daniel Zeitoun, Cook cut in front of his defender and got a header toward the goal. A small deflection by the Pfeiffer defender was not enough to turn away Cook's shot, which gave the Captains a 4-0 lead.

Boone added a goal of his own when he lobbed a shot over the keeper in the 85th minute of play. He stole the ball from a defender and had plenty of room in front of him to run and take his space. Once he lined up the shot, he deposited it into the left side of the goal.

Rounding out the impressive offensive performance was senior Keoni Rison in the 87th minute with a line drive shot into the right side of the goal. Senior Jordan Yarros delivered a cross from right to left, where Rison was alone to take the shot just outside the box. His bender found the right half of the goal and wrapped up the six-goal day.

CNU outshot Pfeiffer, 27-8, while putting 10 on-goal compared to just two on-frame for the Falcons. In goal, Zach Pedini played the bulk of the shutout and combined with Luke Pfeifer for the combined clean sheet. Pedini made two saves in the game.

The Captains will return to action on Wednesday, September 5 as they travel to N.C. Wesleyan College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm in Rocky Mount, N.C.
