GLENSIDE, Pa. -- After the threat of Hurricane Florence shut down much of the East Coast, including Christopher Newport University, the nationally-ranked Captains will return to action on Monday with a women's soccer match at Arcadia University at 4:00 pm. The Captains (3-0-0) have endured three straight postponements due to weather, including two influenced by Florence, and will be playing a full game for the first time since September 5.
Kickoff is slated for 4:00 pm in Glenside, Pa. as the Captains take on the host Knights, coming off a 1-0 win over nationally-ranked Misericordia on Saturday. Arcadia improved to 5-0-1 on the season with the win, and are riding a four-game winning streak.
CNU students returned to campus on Sunday afternoon as the campus re-opened at 12:00 pm following a four-and-a-half day evacuation. Teams were not allowed to meet or practice during the closure, and the Captains returned to campus with their fellow students on Sunday. Classes will meet as scheduled and all university offices will be open for regular business hours beginning Monday morning.
With short time to prepare for the Knights, the Captains are looking to regain the momentum they showed in the first week of the season when the team opened 3-0-0 with an 11-2 goal differential. Leading the charge in the season-opening surge was senior
Gabby Gillis, who was named National Player of the Week after scoring 11 points in the first two games. Sophomores
Riley Cook and
Maddie Cochran have each added a pair of goals to Gillis' team-leading five as the CNU offense is off to a hot start.
Defensively, juniors
Shaye Doherty and
Keiley McCarthy have started all three games with sophomore
Lulu Manley on the back line. In goal,
Haley Eiser and
Maddy Belanger have each seen action in the early portion of the schedule, as the defensive unit has combined for a 0.67 goals against average.
Arcadia comes into the contest with nine goals in their first six games, led by two goals each from Veronica Garcia, Erin Vander Plaat, and Bridget Sway. Six different players have scored a goal for the Knights this season, who are unbeaten through the first six games for the third time in the last six seasons. This will be the first matchup all-time between CNU and Arcadia.
Live stats will be available of the action starting at 4:00 pm, with the link found on the women's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.
Following the Monday afternoon matchup in out-of-conference action, the Captains will return travel to Roanoke College for another non-conference tilt on Thursday, September 20. The next game, at Methodist University, has already been postponed due to the after effects of Hurricane Florence and will be made up on October 3, marking the fourth game in six scheduled contests to be impacted by weather this season for CNU.
