FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The second-seeded Christopher Newport men's tennis team travels to top-seeded Mary Washington on Saturday, May 5 for the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference Championship at 2:00 pm. The Captains (14-8) will look to defend their conference title against the Eagles (19-5) as the two teams matchup in the CAC Championship for the fourth straight season.
Both teams are nationally-ranked heading into title bout, with Christopher Newport checking in at No. 34 nationally and Mary Washington coming in at No. 17 in the country. In the regular season matchup, the Eagles won, 9-0, taking a 24-11 lead in the all-time series.
In last season's CAC Championship matchup, the Captains won the program's first ever CAC title with a 5-3 win in Fredericksburg. This year, the team has been led by seniors
David Reed and
Justin Cerny, combining for 29 singles wins and pairing together for 13 doubles victories this year. Both players are ranked regionally as singles players while also ranking sixth together in doubles play.
Junior
Nicholas Ruzicka leads the team in singles wins with an 18-8 record, including a 15-5 mark in dual action. Ruzicka also has 18 doubles wins, helping lead a team effort that has included a 71.2% winning percentage in tandem play as a group. CNU has been exceptional at No. 3 doubles, going 18-4 with Ruzicka and
Dominic Lacombe piling up 10 wins for the Captains.
