NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The second-seeded Christopher Newport men's tennis team secured it's fourth straight berth in the Capital Athletic Conference Championship match with a 5-2 win over third-seeded Salisbury University on Wednesday afternoon. The Captains improved to 14-8 overall this season with the win, while the Sea Gulls fall to 16-6.Â
With the win in the semifinal round, the Captains will advance to face Mary Washington in the CAC Championship this Saturday, May 5.Â
CNU swept the doubles matches, taking a 3-0 lead in the postseason battle before splitting four singles matches for the win.
Andy Mason and
William Trang picked up the first point of the day with an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, defeating Patrick MacLean and Matthew Ryan. Then, the Captains' senior tandem at No. 1 doubles earned an 8-6 win over Ian Siew and Colt Williamson as CNU's
David Reed and
Justin Cerny improved to 12-6 in duals this season.Â
Rounding out the doubles sweep was sophomore
Dominic Lacombe and junior
Nicholas Ruzicka at No. 3. The Captains' duo won, 8-4, over Stefan Hein and Kelson Weber.Â
Moving into singles play, Salisbury cut the lead to 3-1 with a win at No. 3, but CNU moved into position for the win with Reed's straight set victory at No. 1. Reed defeated Williamson, 6-3, 6-2, as CNU took a 4-1 lead in the semifinals. Salisbury added another win at No. 5, but the Captains clinched the match when Ruzicka finished off MacLean at No. 4, 6-4, 6-2.Â
Seniors
Dillon Sykes and
Justin Cerny each won their first sets at No. 6 and No. 2, respectively, at the time the match was clinched.Â
CNU will return to action this Saturday looking to defend the conference crown. Match time is yet to be determined.Â
