YORK, Pa. -- With a pair of Capital Athletic Conference matches in central Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon, the 24th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team cruised to a pair of 9-0 wins to improve to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in league play. CNU dropped Penn State Harrisburg in the first match of the day and then York (Pa.) in the afternoon bout.

Johanna Ranta-aho won both of her matches at No. 1 singles, running her win streak to 10 straight matches. The Helsinki, Finland native is now 14-4 this season including an 11-3 mark in dual action. She also won both of her doubles matches on Sunday, pairing with
Lily Schreiber at No. 2 against Penn State Harrisburg and then with
Isabelle Wessel at No. 2 against York. Both wins were 8-0 victories as Ranta-aho is now 10-4 in tandem play this year.
The Captains swept through doubles play against the Lions with just one game surrendered at No. 1, where
Kate Huck and
Kara Ferner paired for an 8-1 win over Sydney Nye and Courtney Bennett. In singles play, five of the six matches finished in clean 6-0, 6-0 finals, on lines 2 through 6. Earning the wins, in order, were Wessel,
Meili Konell, Ferner, Schreiber, and
Colette Gilbert.
Facing York later in the day, the Captains again surged to a quick start, 3-0, after flawless doubles play. CNU won 8-0 at 1, 2, and 3 doubles, including Huck and Ferner's second win of the day at No. 1.
In singles play, Ranta-aho downed Katie Wagner (6-3, 6-2) at No. 1, and Huck defeated Rachel Wagner (7-5, 6-4) at No. 2. Wessel, Konell, Ferner, and Schreiber won the remainder of the matches as CNU cruised to its second shutout win of the day.
The Captains will host Salisbury University at Noon on Saturday, April 14 for the final home match of the regular season.
