NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team improved to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play on Saturday after a 6-3 win against Salisbury University on the Eyre Courts.
Johanna Ranta-aho won in both singles and doubles to lead the way for CNU.
The Captains carried a 2-1 advantage after doubles play with wins at No. 2 and 3. At No. 3, the CNU tandem of Ranta-aho and
Lily Schreiber shut out their opponents, Taylor Cooper and Sage Cole, 8-0. In the No. 2 bout, rookie
Kara Ferner and senior
Kate Huck combined for an 8-3 win over Jordan Schaefer and Sydney Soto.Â
Ranta-aho would also earn a win, her 11th straight, at No. 1 singles to get things rolling for CNU during individual play. She won 6-3, 6-4 over Annika Kezman.Â
The rest of the CNU points came from seniors during their final regular season match at home.
Claire Dockrill won over Cooper at No. 3 by a score of 2-6, 6-1, 6-4;
Isabelle Wessel won at No. 5 singles agianst Schaefer 2-6, 6-2, 6-3; and
Meili Konell won a quick 6-2, 6-2 match at No. 6 singles against Shannon Hickman.Â
The Captains have just two regular season matches left as they travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland on Sunday to close out conference play before taking on Johns Hopkins in the finale on April 21.Â
