FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- In a match shortened by weather, the 24th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains secured the #2 seed in the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with a 5-0 win over St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday afternoon. The Captains improved to 12-4, 6-1 while the Seahawks fell to 7-7, 2-5.
The match was played to decision and CNU quickly put away their conference foes in the last league match of the season. The Captains swept through doubles and picked up shutout victories at 1 and 2 singles for the win.
Sophomore
Johanna Ranta-aho won both of her matches at singles and doubles. First, at No. 1 doubles with
Alexandra Drye, Ranta-aho improved to 12-4 with an 8-3 win over Sophie Gary and Chelsea English. Then, in singles action, the Helsinki, Finland won her 12th straight match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Gary, improving to 16-4 overall.
In the other two doubles matches CNU won 8-1 and 8-3, respectively.
Kara Ferner paired with
Emily Morgan at No. 2, taking down Raziela Manangan and Savannah Bergen; then,
Lily Schreiber and
Kristi Wong paired for an 8-3 win at No. 3 over Alden Grosh and Claire Bodine.
Rounding out the team points on Sunday was Meili Konel at No. 2 singles, taking down Bodine in a 6-0, 6-0 win.
The Captains will return to action with one more dual match before starting the postseason. CNU will take on Johns Hopkins University on April 21.
