BALTIMORE, Md. -- Sophomore
Johanna Ranta-aho closed out the regular season with a 13-match win streak, improving to 17-4 on the season, while the 24th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 loss at No. 20 Johns Hopkins University. The Captains closed out the regular season with a 12-5 record overall.
The Captains top singles player came away with one of the biggest wins of her career on Saturday evening as she toppled Anjie Kashyap (4-6, 6-4, 10-1). Kashyap started the year ranked No. 27 in the nation and was ranked 7th in the Atlantic South heading into Saturday's matchup. With the win, Ranta-aho improved to 14-3 in duals this season, all at the No. 1 position.
Despite the 8-1 final score, the match between the top 25 programs was far closer, with three singles matches stretched to a third set and a pair of doubles bouts tightly contested. In doubles, the Blue Jays swept to a 3-0 lead, but the Captains battled at No. 2 and 3.
Kara Ferner played with
Kate Huck at No. 2, taking on Dhanya Asokumar and Kimberly Zou in an 8-5 loss. At No. 3,
Emily Morgan and
Isabelle Wessel fell, 8-6, to Katie Gauch and Margo Gerke.
In singles, Asokumar slipped past Wessel at No. 4 (6-7, 6-3, 10-5) and Gauch defeated
Meili Konell at No. 6 (4-6, 6-4, 10-4) in two hard-fought battles. The other three singles matches were decided in straight sets, but CNU had a good showing across the board.
Kate Huck fell (6-1, 6-1) at No. 2 against Sophia Strickland;
Claire Dockrill lost (6-2, 6-2) to Zou at No. 3; and
Alexandra Drye suffered a setback (6-3, 6-2) to Chrissy Simon at No. 5.
