ARLINGTON, Va. -- Showcasing a well-balanced attack, 10 different Captains registered a point as the 17th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team stormed past Marymount, 14-6, during a Capital Athletic Conference match-up on Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge Park.
Leading the way on the offensive side, a pair of freshmen stole the show as
Will Stockhausen and
Dylan Rice both registered hat-tricks. Meanwhile,
Matthew Crist also contributed four points, including three assists, while
Lucas Barry struck twice as well.
Helping the Captains control possession throughout the contest,
Tyler Iriondo won 11 of his 13 faceoffs and grabbed five ground balls. Crist also collected five rollers, while
Drew Cornell snatched four.
With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 11-2 on the season, including 4-1 in league action. The setback drops Marymount to 2-11 with an 0-4 ledger in CAC play.
Although the Saints managed to open the scoring early in the first quarter, the Captains landed a bevy of blows to steal back the momentum. Showcasing the squad's youth, first-year star
Max Wayne forced a turnover on the defensive end before fellow freshmen
Phoenix Hines and
Miles Collins capitalized on the other side to knot the score at one.
Quickly breaking the deadlock,
Glenn Doering sniped a shot in the fifth minute of action before
Dylan Rice followed suit just 50 seconds later to grab a 3-1 edge.
Looking for more breathing room, Christopher Newport stretched its lead with three minutes left in the opening period. Following a timeout, Crist connected with Barry, who tattooed the back of the net for the squad's fourth goal in the first quarter.
Although Marymount managed to break through again at the tail end of the period to cut its deficit down to two, CNU never lost its rhythm. Continuing to torch the MU defense, Stockhausen and
Drew Magnusson added back-to-back darts in the middle of the second quarter. Later, following the Saints' third goal, Crist set up another dagger by Stockhausen to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
After the offense stole the show during the first 30 minutes, the defense was the story in the third quarter.
Scott McAneney smothered three shots by MU, while the rest of the Captains blanketed the field. Keeping the hosts off the board, Hines,
Will Cogan, and
Jackson Deal all stripped Saints and forced turnovers on the way to a spotless 15-minute period.
Following the quiet third stanza, Marymount managed to score early in the fourth before the Captains unleashed an impressive assault to close out the contest in style. During a three-minute window in the middle of the period, Stockhausen, Crist, and Barry all found the back of the net. Later, after the Saints momentarily disrupted that surge, CNU added the perfect punctuation mark at the end of the quarter.
Shane McKenna kicked off the late flurry with a laser before Iriondo and Rice did the rest. Iriondo won a pair of faceoffs in a 30-second span, while Rice converted both possessions into goals. Minutes later, with time winding down,
Reeves Dunn drove home the final nail with a man-up missile as Christopher Newport walked away with a 14-6 triumph.
Overall, CNU held a 44-29 advantage in shots and a 40-37 lead in ground balls. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Cogan and
Josh Puterbaugh both chipped in with two caused turnovers apiece.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the squad hosts Mary Washington at 7 p.m.
