After their program-best nine-game winning streak was snapped in a hard-fought 9-8 setback at No. 18 Roanoke, the Captains regrouped with a 13-8 triumph at St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday. Against the Seahawks,
Matthew Crist registered a game-high seven points, including five assists.
Dylan Rice and
Lucas Barry also contributed hat-tricks, while
Tony Cruz won 17 of his 24 faceoff attempts.
For his efforts during the week, which also included a six-point showcase at Roanoke, Crist was honored as the CAC Offensive Player of the Week. His award-winning stretch was highlighted by the 186th point of his career, which moved him past former teammate Will Geise for the all-time program lead. He now sits just three points shy of 200 for his career.
Along with Crist's historic performance, Rice also established a new freshman record for points in a season. He now has 47 this year, which tops Britt Hoover's previous freshman standard of 44 set in 2010. Additionally,
Jackson Deal added his 20th assist of the year against St. Mary's (Md.). That moves him into a tie with Justin King for the most helpers by a freshman in program history. King established the standard with 20 assists in 2008.
Salisbury has motored through its last two opponents after opening league action with a 15-6 setback at No. 2 York (Pa.). Following the loss, the Sea Gulls have upended Wesley, 25-3, and Southern Virginia, 22-9. In the squad's victory over the Knights on Saturday, Emory Wongus erupted for five goals, and Pierre Armstrong added six points. The team also dominated on faceoffs, winning 26 of the 35 battles, including a 16-for-20 effort by T.J. Logue.
So far this year, Salisbury ranks second in the nation with a .903 clearing percentage and sixth with 428 ground balls. The Sea Gulls also sit 21st in scoring offense, averaging 14.27 goals per game. On an individual level, Kyle Tucker ranks fourth in the CAC with 21 caused turnovers and fifth with 47 ground balls, and Corey Gwin is third with 28 goals. In the crease, Brandon Warren sits second in the league with a 7.25 goals-against-average while also sporting a .500 save percentage.
In four previous meetings between the two programs, Salisbury holds a 3-1 edge. The Sea Gulls won last year's match-up, 17-5, in Maryland.
Following the midweek game, Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. test at Marymount.
